Realistically, you want 64bit, multi-core processor based systems. Add a GOOD ( Quadro based ) graphics card. You want ACCURACY, not speed. Add memory, you will need it. A minimum of 2GB for calculations and 256MB for display.
The other option is to build a BEOWULF system out of cheap " bricks " like the pros do. I am going to attempt that shortly using HP e-PC based " bricks " running ClusterKnoppix. This is the CHEAP way to get a parallel supercomputer. And it won't cost $10K/month in electrical bills to run it either.
We have the power of an early Cray on the desktop NOW.

don't buy one.go and get the stuff to build one .if you haven't ever done that than go to your local repair shop and ask them if they build PCs if so tell them what you do and they should be able to build one for you that is in your price range.just tell them what you do and what your price range is if they do build them.you will want dual core and a good video card.
