I have an old Dell XPS-T (I think.) desktop. It has a 500MHz Pentium 3 and 750MB RAM. Can I replace the CPU with a faster one without changing anything else? I think 1GHz should be fast enough for Win XP. As it is, Win XP runs ok, but it takes several minutes for it to boot and go through all of the start-up programs. I am knowledgable about hardware, so if possible, give me the details.

Thanks.

BTW, I increased the RAM to 750MB from 512MB because a friend had some extra DIMMs.

I just built a new PC for about $300, so I don't want to invest too much money into this old one.

you have a Pentium 3 most likely its a Socket 370 (there have been some slot 1 models); when you open your computer case do you see what looks like a cart w/fan & heatsink attached to its side (slot 1) or a fan & heatsink on top of the processor (Socket 370)?

If you have a Socket 370 you can to a high degree of certainty upgrade to a 1ghz Pentium 3.

Dell XPS 15 computing device computing device is somewhat intense high quality in its layout and does some notably intelligent issues that lots of alternative laptops do no longer look to furnish. The chaise is very very nearly entirely made out of aluminum and it feels enormously think of; so some distance i've got no longer encountered any areas the place the steel flexes or makes creaking noises. between the biggest issues dealing with the function of laptops is the cooling equipment. On laptops that are no longer right ventilated the processor will over warmth decrease than sufficient rigidity and the computing device will crash (this became the main concern with the dv4). i think of the wonderful occasion of perfect computing device cooling could be got here across interior the Asus G73 however the XPS 15 is provided in enormously close.

The type of motherboard and speed of its front side bus (FSB) will determine if you can put a better processor in it, and what type. The FSB of the processor must be the same as the motherboard, and the processor and motherboard has to have the same type of socket. There's different socket types e.g. socket 775
