I have purchased a emachines with 850MHZ INTEL CELERON
192MB RAM (upgrading to 256MB)
DSL ETHERNET READY and
CONEXANT 56K MODEM
20GB HARD DRIVE > I added a new dvd/cdrom to it.
I got this for my parents for Christmas to check email and do simple things on the internet. They know very little about computers..
Will it be fast enough? I can't upgrade the RAM any higher than 256 MB. It is running windows XP that I just installed.

Robert--why is it that the XP will make it run slower? I hate to take the XP off. When I got the computer it was supposibly tested and working, but had a WARNING ERROR---Resource Conflict--PCI network controller in slot 1 & 2. Then it went directly to the blue screen that says ***STOP*** The ACPI BIOS in this system is not fully compliant with the ACPI specification.
It didn't come with any drivers or restore disks but fortunately I had a Windows 98 cd from a old computer with the certificate. i installed that but was still getting the resource conflict problem. I then installed XP and it recognized the modem and ethernet cards and I no longer got the resource conflict messages.

This will be fine for basic email and word processing... I have an almost identical machine (celeron 733mhz, 256MB ram...) but I found that windows XP ran reeeeaaallllyyy slooowly, but when I took XP off and put Windows 98 on it was quite fast.

So save yourself the headache and "downgrade" to Win 98, it'll save you a lot of headaches.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

oh definitely. I have an older one that that listed and it runs on win 98 and does pretty well. I have high speed internet on it, and i use it to experiement with different software.
If your parents use it for email and web surfing, they'll be fine.
good luck.
ps: one hint i'd recommend is for them to use Firefox and not Internet Explorer and teach them a little about web security.

Hi! This computer should be enough for them to do what you intend (email and web surfing), they may have slow performance on videos, but for the rest it's OK don't worry. Hope they like their gift! Merry Christmas!
