I was told once that it's better to keep your computer on 24/7 and let it go into sleep mode rather than turn it off. I understand it doesn't use very much electricity and it's better on the components. Now I'm hearing it's better to turn it of like when you go to bed, etc. What is the right answer?

I get this question a lot.

Honestly, either won't kill it - but, personally, I think it's better to leave it on. The entire process of starting up and shutting down takes a lot of toll on the computer; whereas staying on constantly doesn't do the same wear and tear to equipment.

You really only have to turn off your monitor, and give the computer a decent reboot once a week or so.

Everything that isn't completely unplugged from the wall outlet still draws electricity. And computers left on of course use up plenty of electricity. Your power supply unit in the computer is at least a couple hundred watts and probably more. And that's also not including the monitor's use, even if the monitor is an LCD.

So, would you leave a 250, 350, 450 or more light bulb burning 24/7? It is not really all that much "better on the components" to turn the thing off and give it a rest. Think about it - what's better for components, being turned off everyday when not in use, or to be in use 24/7? A constantly spinning hdd, a constantly on monitor, a constantly operating video card, chip set, cpu? Turning off the computer will not adversely affect your components, and it will save you in the long run on utility bills to turn it off at least overnight.

Do whichever you prefer. Whether starting up or waking up, you put just as much "stress" on the PC. So it is really not an issue. You do save some electricity with a complete shut down, but it is only a few pennies a month.

I do recommend that you do a complete shut down once a week. There are certain memory cleaning chores, etc. that are only done during shut down and restart that can help to keep your memory running properly.

But beyond that, its your call.

Everyone has a different opinion, as someone that actually dealt with these machines for many years I can tell you what I found to be true.

Different components fail whether it's left on all the time or it's shut off regularly, i.e. cpu fans tend to fail more on machines that are left on 24/7 where as I saw more drive failures on machines that were turned off and on.

I suggest that you only turn off your computer only for around once a month (thats what I am doing). Because if you shut down your PC too often, it will gradually become slower and slower in its speed. Every time you turn on your computer it will keep on dragging.

It will also make your computer breakdown faster So every time you are done with it, just let it hybernate or set it to standby.

Not only does it prolongs your computer's "life" but it will be of more convinience for you, every time you want to use it, you don't need to wait for a long time to load its setting.

Try it out.....

There is no good reason for keeping your computer on 224/7...

Running it all of the time makes you more vulnerable to virus/trojan attack and wears out your powersupply, fans, and harddrive faster.
