I am interested in building my own computer. I am familiar with most of the terminology and have experience installing a lot of different things into a computer. But what I don't really know much about is motherboards. What makes a motherboard good. What should I take into consideration before getting one? What is all this socket stuff?

I have an old Gateway computer with a 500 mhz Intel Pentium 3 processor and I want to upgrade it to a better processor. Either a Pentium 4 or an AMD Athlon 64. I know that in order to do this I will need to swap out my motherboard. Is it possible to swap out my motherboard and would this cause any problems with my computer?

I use a window 98 first version operating system, pls advise of venue to backup large files. I had a floopy & a CD drive. Thought of using USB Flash Drive, but discover from Sandisk Tech Support that only Win98 SE version or up can use USD portable flash drive, and they recommend upgrade to Win 98SE. But contact Microsoft Tech Support, Win 98SE or Win 2000 version upgrade are no longer available for purchase or download support. Must buy Win XP. Please recommend venue to create backup for large files that I currently store on Win 98. Even if I purchase a new Win XP desktop, I still need to transfer files to new system. Thanks so much in advance

I bought a Dell about 2 years ago and it was my first personal computer. It came with a Pentium 4, 40GB hard drive, 256mb of RAM, and I dont know what kind of motherboard it came with.

The last 2-3 months I've been buying parts from newegg to build my first computer, and I assembled it using a Athlon 3400, Westing 80 GB hard drive, Patriot 512mb RAM, EVGA Geforce FX5500 graphics card, and BIOSTAR K8M800-M7A motherboard. The performance in this computer is DEFINITELY wrong, because it runs as if it has absolutely no RAM, even though the Patriot stick shows up in the system properties.

Does anyone have any ideas of what could be wrong? Could I take it to a local shop and have them try to figure out what is hooked up wrong or isnt compatible?

Trying to figure which computer to buy. I don't play games. Anyway, one computer says: "Processor: Intel® Core™ Solo processor T1350 1.86GHz, 533MHz FSB". While adding << Core Solo >> do we get more multitasking and speed than only 1.86GHZ?
