I am interested in building my own computer. I am familiar with most of the terminology and have experience installing a lot of different things into a computer. But what I don't really know much about is motherboards. What makes a motherboard good. What should I take into consideration before getting one? What is all this socket stuff?

CPU socket is the socket that the cpu is in. It is important for the socket of the motherboard you buy to be the same as the processor you buy. It is also important that the motherboard you buy supports the processor you buy. Other things are also important like the interface your drives use (SATA, IDE, etc.) and the type of RAM supported. Another important thing is the northbridge which is the chipset used on the upper section of the motherboard this often includes all the motherboard periferal ports like the network and ps2 ports. There are many manfactures of these chipsets mainly VIA, intel, ATI, and my peronal favorite NVIDIA. A good chipset often has a good BIOS which helps you control your computer settings. I like NVIDIA because they have very few problems and they have a utility for their motherboards called ntune which allows you to control all the motherboard settings and overclock. Be sure you have done your research before you get one because it connects to all the componets and serves as the backbone of the computer.

depending on what cpu you want for your computer will determine what type of motherboard you get. check out cpusolutions.com for their barebones kits and the motherboards they sell.
