I want to basically wipe the hard drive clean of everything that was non-existent on the day I took the computer out of the box.

If you have a Cd that came with your computer when you bought it use that. If it's an HP or Compac, you can BUY the restore Cd from HP or you can use the partition that they put on your hard drive. If you have a WinXP installation Cd, use it and follow the on screen directions. A word to the wise, download Belarc Advisor (FREE) and print off the results BEFORE you do anything! It will tell you the key code for your version of WinXP. You'll need the key code if you re-install WinXP.

Somewhat hard to do... Some systems come with a system restore that does just that (try holding F10 or something right as the computer turns on). Otherwise, it might have a CD that installs it to the day you took it out of the box. If neither of these is the answer, you will probably have to totally wipe the drive, reinstall windows, then add all the stuff it came with back again.

if it came with restore cds or a dvd use that. you can also buy them for your specific model but it won't be cheap. otherwise just do a clean windows install after format.
