i'm buying a computer off of dell, and since they really dont give too much information on this, i'm wondering: which processor is better? AMD athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 3800+, or pentium D Processor 820 with Dual Core ? which is better overall?

Both are very good at their level, AMD greatly supports Gaming and Graphical Use and Intel mainly supports Programming and other works. Decide your work and goto that Processor which u want for your work.

Intel made it easier to understand, Right... NOT!
If intel was clear then a Celeron D would be dual core also.

Ok nuff with the discrediting of the noobs.
The Athlon X2 is a dual core ya know cores X 2, anyway not much simpler than that.

If you want real power go for a conroe the E6300 cost about the same as the Athlon 3800 X2.

The pentuim D is dead, the 820 has good overclocking potential if you would be building this computer yourself. However it does not outperform the 3800 X2 unless overclocked to 4Ghz and on watercooling. soo you Do NOT get what you pay for.

The Pentium D 820 Dual-Core is better in almost every way. People always try to say AMD is better for graphic rendering in gaming. That's downright mindless; nowadays graphic rendering is for all intents and purposes independent of the CPU. What matters is the BUS speed of your motherboard, the amount and speed of your video card memory and the amount and speed of your conventional memory. The Pentium 820 D Dual-Core, is much quicker and more resilient. Remember, Intel controls the CPU market for a reason.

I agree with Johnathan_F to a certain degree. The playing field is indeed level. But, mindless is a little harsh. I own both Intel and AMD, and there is virtually no difference in either.

don't trust in any answer ! ( is your problem !)
really , is simply ...
amd x2 3800 is much reliable ( on am2 socket - you need a am2 motherboard . recomend ASUS M2N-E ... is about 120 usd ...)
intel is good , but the price no. 820 series work on high temperatures , and his fan don't really work good. result : you can't use at max power ( capacity )
is your joice...
intel 945 series is really good , but see the price...
amd fx 62 is best option 4 dual - core...( search the internet 4 )

There little in way of practical difference between them actually. I would suggest, however, that you get the Athlon64 because the AMD64 architecture is far solidly built than Intel's EM64T implementation so much so that you'll actually (emphasis) feel the benefit of 64-bit computing.
