Being a complete novice, I want set up my first tank but know very little. Ideally I'd like a cold water tank, but one of the most important aspects of the tank is that it looks good. I've got a hexagonal 26 litre tank with filter and light, but want to know which fish are best suited to this environment and look the business. Preferably no more than £15 each and easy to get hold of.

Ok, bought two paradise fish and put them in my tank. The male decided to start attacking the other fish, so i took them out and gave the pair a tank of their own. In the big tank the male was very forward but in their own he stays under the filter all the time. They have started acting really timid and just sit under the filter if anyone is in the room. Is this normal fish behaviour?

because my guppies had babies, and i read that the moms will eat them, so its best to seperate them.
so i was thinking about just going out and buying like a little betta tank for them, but do they need the pump/filter or whatever?

Would the amount of salt used have any harmful effects on the animals, or the live freshwater plants?

My beta has been sick or at least lazy for a long time now...he eats when i put food in his tank but i dont see him move alot more than to eat or occasionally get air. he does alot of laying on the bottom on the tank on his tummy and it looks like his breathing is labored.

what does this sound like?

if he is in fact sick, i dont want him to suffer anymore, as i love animals...what is a HUMANE way to put down a beta fish?

My tank has been up and going for a week now and the amonia level is still at 0.75. Is it safe to add my mollies, or should I wait? (we have another tank that is overcrowded so I am moving the male mollies to the new tank)

Also, just out of curiosity, what are some other fish that are easy to find (I live in a fairly small city) that I can put with the mollies besides platies, guppies, etc? Something, ya know, more interesting...and colorful;)

I would like to know if what i have done for my guppy is the correct thing. I bought a seperate tank for her, put some breeding grass and plenty of plants in it and put her in this tank. She has been in this tank for almost a week. Should i release her back into the community tank for a little while or keep her in the tank i have her in now?

I hate this myth, and can't beleive so many people keep passing it around as fact. If it was true, then you can put a 15 inch oscar (those serious aquarists know how messy they are) in a 15 gallon tank. This is so wrong and leads so many beginers down the wrong path. I just want to hear peoples response, and if anyone agrees with the myth, let me know why. Either way free 2 points, 10 to the answer I like the best.

So, I'm going to get a 5 gallon tank, and I'm sure it's different than taking care of a 2 gallon tank since it has a filter and heater. So basicly I need to know: How much water do you change and how often? What size heater do you need? And, what sort of filter is good?
This will be for 1 male betta. =]
