Being a complete novice, I want set up my first tank but know very little. Ideally I'd like a cold water tank, but one of the most important aspects of the tank is that it looks good. I've got a hexagonal 26 litre tank with filter and light, but want to know which fish are best suited to this environment and look the business. Preferably no more than £15 each and easy to get hold of.

you have a 7us gallon tank on your hand

First of all you're very limited on coldwater fish, because there are very few of them
a goldfish is outa Q for you, because they need at least a 10 gallon by themselves

another coldwater fish is white cloud mountain minnow and a panda cory is another coldwater one which is a bottom dweller

if you get a heater, you have more choices

as example
1 betta
5 neon tetras
3 male platies (which come in many different colors)
3 cory cats (like pepper cory)

Hope that helps
Good luck

Guppies, mollies, plecos, platys, neons, glowlights, red zebra danio, and silver dollars are all really cool. A really awesome way to figure out which fish to get is to go to various stores and look around. Bring a notepad and write down any and every fish that you like. Then when you get home, you order them from coolest to dullest. Then you work around the coolest fish. If this fish isn't good for your tank take it off of the list and move down. Then see which fish are compatible to your coolest fish. Look for water temperature, waste levels, whether or not they are schooling fish, the environment needed, if they will eat other fish, and what they eat. This is a fantastic way to learn about fish and a great way to set up your tank. Hope this helps!
