I am doing a project at school where we have to maintain a fish tank for the entire year, but my fish keep disappearing! So far, two of them have just diappeared. The tank is covered, and the fish we have in the tank are: 5 neon tetras, 2 cardinal tetras, 3 albino corys, and 3 fancy guppies. So far, 1 of the cardinal tetras and 1 of the guppies have disappeared. Why is this happening?

I want a 55 gal tank but can only afford a 29 gal. Do you think 9 neon tetras, 5 tiger barbs, 4 cory cats and 3 mollies are too much for a 29 gal. I can't get the 55 gal but I want a lively fish tank. Serious answers only please.

I bought two tiger ocscars and I am wanting to breed them. I have a 50 gallon fish tank, and I have a little 10 gallon tank I used two put them both in there to prevent other fishes in my large aquariam from eating the eggs, and I use to allow the baby fish to grow before I place them in with the larger fish. I placed the two oscars in the small tank for a week, and still had to results in reproduction.. Any advice?

My tropical fish keep showing red threadlike worms out their cloaca. my angel fish had it first and it died and now my gourami has it. basically they have about 5-6 bright red threads sticking out their cloaca - sometimes there is only one but it is usually a bunch of them. Here are some photos - sorry its not the best its hard to take photos in fish tank. Can anyone tell me what this is and how i treat it?

I know that it is illegal to keep game fish in an aquarium such as largemouth bass and bluegills. Since peacock bass is a game fish (but not in California) I wonder if it is legal to keep one.

One of my pond koi got attacked by a turtle today. I don't know where the turtle came from, but he got him good. I managed to get the little guy out of his mouth, but I want to know if he's beyond saving or not. The turtle got him by the tail, and he's torn open slightly at the top of the lateral line and behind the dorsal fin. Luckily the turtle didn't manage to get any 'chunks' of him, just torn open a bit. The tail fin is pretty torn up, but he is still able to move his back fin, so I know there can't be too much damage. Missing a lot of scales, but aside from that, he looks pretty good. Been breathing really heavy though.

This happened a little over an hour ago, and the koi is still alive. He's mostly just floating around in the quarantine tank I put him in, but he can still swim if you give him a nudge. Is it beyond saving? Should I humanely euthanize it? Or can I treat it somehow?

Does this refer to earthworms you get outside or bait you buy in stores? And does the senegalus have to be a certain size before it can eat an earthworm?

I know you'd have to wash them off if so.

I have five convict cichlids all about 2.5 to 3 inches. I've had them about a month and I believe they've worked out the pecking order since I rarely see any nipping or serious aggression. In fact after about two weeks, there almost as peaceful as community fish instead of the little devils all my sources have stressed. I've seen no eggs, babies, or even breeding behavior as i've studied as of yet, but my two biggest ones both have bloated bellies. At first I thought they were being overfed but I feed twice a day and each time the food is gobbled up within seconds and I'm not even sure they're getting enough sometimes. Could it be I've got egg stuffed females an no males or what? I've waited for them to reach a decent size hoping i'd get at least one sexually mature pair our of the five, but I still believe i have a tank of females since none exhibit male behavior. Should I get a definite male and see wht happens? What do you think?

our aquarium is about 6 weeks old. after the first week we started having a problem with green hair algae. we purchased a sea hare to help with the problem. two weeks later we purchased a Lettuce Nudibranch to help out. this afternoon when we came home, the Lettuce Nudibranch was attached at the top of the aquarium and looked sickly. he is smaller and not as filled out as he has been. he is about 4 weeks old and we have not had any problems with any other creatures. has anyone ever heard of a Lettuce Nudibranch splitting or laying eggs in an aquarium? is it possible that he is sick or that something attacked him? we have several snails and hermit crabs in the tank and have just added three blue chromis as starter fish. the chromis have been in the tank about a week and have thrived well. we have not seen anything mess with the Lettuce Nudibranch. any help will be great! thanks!

Hi-the gourami was the first fish and when we added the angelfish (about same size) -gourami nipped angel's tail, followed him everywhere at first and then stopped. Now they are fine together and best buds.

We tried adding 3 harlequin rasboras (small ones) and gourami immediately started chasing them all. He made short work of 1 and he is now dead.

Thinking now that we need to add bigger fish so he won't bully them and different fish.

We were thinking some barbs might show gourami whose boss but all sources say they aren't good with angels.

My son likes danios, bleeding heart tetras,black-finned tetras, penguin tetras. However, my older son has kept danios before and they can be chasers/aggressive/fin nippers with other fish.

Any idea aquarium experts out here?
TIA

Does anybody have any in depth reading on channel catfish? They're abundant in my local Pittsburgh rivers. You can catch them with french fries while fishing (i.e. little effort required).

I think it would be cool to do a big species tank that emulates the local environment for a couple of these guys... Like lift some aged stones with moss growing on them & driftwood / roots from the same location that the fish would be acquired from.

Does anybody have any good web resources / reading on these fish? Or are they completely inappropriate for an aquarium? The ones I see are typically around 12" long by around 9" around.

we put it in a bowl but this morning i found it dead. im thinking because the water was too cold? because it was just a normal bowl and i gave it flakes so it could eat? or maybe because right away when we bought and came home weput it inside th bowl?

(breeding is not part of it)... and which of the 2 requires better care including water conditions... in short which of the two would live longer in a more harsh condition than the other...
