I want a 55 gal tank but can only afford a 29 gal. Do you think 9 neon tetras, 5 tiger barbs, 4 cory cats and 3 mollies are too much for a 29 gal. I can't get the 55 gal but I want a lively fish tank. Serious answers only please.

If you have adequate filtration, those would be okay as far as just the number of fish.

But....

Unless you get only male mollies, you'll have them reproducing in the tank. If the fry aren't eaten by the other fish, you'll have a crowding problem in the near future.

Also, tiger barbs are semi-aggressive fish and not the best tankmates for the neons. Most barbs can be a bit nippy with other fish, but tigers are the worst of the bunch. Having a few more may be enough that they would only pick on each other, or sometimes not. If you like the "look" of the tiger barbs, maybe you might want to consider choosing a species that looks very similar, except for the number of stripes - the black ruby barb. For the most part, they look like tigers, but when in breeding condition, the background color changes to a red-purple: http://aquavisie.retry.org/Database/Aquariumfish/Barbus_nigrofasciatus.html These would be a better species for the neons.

Nice to see you're planning to keep the fish in the numbers the schooling species should have!

i own a 29 gal myself with 8 tiger barbs and 8 cory catfishes with others and they're fine. The neon tetras however might be a problem. I had 14 neon tetras and 7 glo light tetras in the same tank as well but a few died due to the stress the tiger barbs were giving them. You may want to put the tetras in a separate tank like i did, wal mart has a 10 gal w/ filter, lid, light for $30. They will be much happier living with fishes that are equal size to them.

I have a 29 gal tank with quite a few fish. I have 2 whisper filters along with the under ground system and I frequently do 1/3 water changes and constantly check the water and everyone is happy. As long as they don't act stressed because of being crowded and chase each other around being aggressive it should be fine. Enjoy your tank i know mine brings me hours of pleasure.

The most widely known rule for stocking a tank is one inch of fish per gallon of water.

So....9 in. + 6.25 in. + 8 in. + 6 in. = 29.25 in. (close enough)

You're OK.
