Fish - October 2007

[Selected]: All categories Pets Fish

It's my husband's fish and we have had it for four years but he doesn't know what kind it is. It's about 7 inches long and about 3 inches from top fin tip to bottom fin tip. It's greyish silve and has a big mouth. It ate one of the three oscars I bought a few months back so I guess he's aggressive. I hope this is enough details to identify it. Thanks

Hi,
I had a platy that gave birth 2 weeks ago almost and now i have another one that is pregnant, 4 in all actually. The one right now is acting weird. My other one was much calmer when she had her babies. This one right now has been all over the tank and going up and down the tank and back and fourth quickly. I left and came back to check on her and she was sitting at the bottom between a rock. I didnt want to seperate her too soon though. Is it possible she could be ready to give birth. Ask only because my other one was totally different and just hid the entire time. I appreciate it thanks.

I have had my 29 gallon tank up and going for almost two months and ever since it has been going, the water has always been cloudy. I started with a whisper 30 PF, got rid of it after a week(it was crap). Then i bought a Hagen aquaclear 30, and i use the foam block with two bio max packs. The water cleared up somewhat but is still cloudy. So i just bought another Hagen aquaclear 30 with the same media setup. Should this cure my problem? The two total up to 300 gph, which means my water is cycling through 10 times per hour.

I discovered a snail in my tank a couple weeks ago I had no other snails so he must have come on some live rock I bought. The tank is only 2 months old. This little guy has been doing fine... Last night I introduced 2 new astrea snails to my tank and they died in 8 hours. the 2 zebra hermits and the peppermint shrimp I bought last night are doing fine, what gives?

I just want to make sure it isn't carnivorous and going to grow up and eat the other snails. I can't find a picture like him. Currently he is SO SMALL about the size of a ladies gold stud earring.

i have a unit that i plan to use for a while for my new tank thats being delivered this week.

the tank is 100x40

the unit is 120x26.

if i fit the tank on this unit, 7cm will have to hang over each end.

the tank will have approx. 140litres of water.

the unit is very sturdy (this part is not an issue...just its width in comparison to the tanks)

my question is, will the tank be safe.

or rather, will the unit take most of the waters weight/pressure?

Is a 5 gallon hex too small for 4-5 neon tetras and a good looking guppy? Do guppies need to have more than one of their kind in the tank? How many bloodfin tetras could i fit?

I'm getting a 5 gallon tank and I'm wondering how to get the most fish for that space without overstocking. I would like some mollies but I feel they might be too big. Guppies are another one of my top choices. Pretty much I would like to have more than 1 fish (like 2-3 or 4-5 small). What would be the best way to stock my tank.
P.S. I want pretty hardy fish that wont die id chem. level are just a little off.

I have one female guppy in my one gallon tank. I know the tank is small, but I am not going to put anymore fish in, and she seems happy. My tank is about 2 weeks through the cycling process, and I have been doing about a 10% water change daily. I have been feeding my guppy one small flake each day. Is this the right amount. I am trying really hard not to overfeed her because of the small tank. She eats it right away, within seconds, and I resist the urge to give her more. I've read that you are supposed to feed fish just what they can consume in 5 minutes, but that seems like I would be feeding her too much. What do you think?

i have a 5-10 gallon air pump that i want to use for a sponge filter for a 1-2.5 gallon. How do i decrease the power? I want to use it for a betta so they dont like much movement. And yes i want to provide it with some sort of filteration.

I understand that goldfish are very dirty and therefore can kill themselves if they have too little water, but it still doesn't make sense to me that betta bowls are still so small.

I have a fish bowl that is a little larger than a gallon. I do a complete water change with aged water (let to sit out a few days to dechlorinate) every week. (actually, I keep two bowls in continuous rotation)

If I were to put a little gravel on the bottom of his bowl, how would I clean it? I'm one of those nervous types that likes everything spotless - would it need to be washed every week?

How would I add a plant to this if I were to get a larger bowl?

Any ideas?

I have my fish in a 1 gal jar so far - I was thinking of getting him a 2.5 gal aquarium....how much and how often would I change the water.

Is there some simple way to do this? I dont have the ability to test water for ammonia, etc...

I am living in a guest room - so its not like I have a lot of space for "Stuff" - I'm glad just to be able to have a fish bowl, y'know?

But I was thinking of maybe getting an itty bitty aquarium.

Any ideas
