i have a unit that i plan to use for a while for my new tank thats being delivered this week.

the tank is 100x40

the unit is 120x26.

if i fit the tank on this unit, 7cm will have to hang over each end.

the tank will have approx. 140litres of water.

the unit is very sturdy (this part is not an issue...just its width in comparison to the tanks)

my question is, will the tank be safe.

or rather, will the unit take most of the waters weight/pressure?

Absolutely not! The overhang created is going to be EXTREMELY unstable and will cause the glass to bend, and eventually break. Having that long of a tank doesn't matter if the width is way off. The rim of the tank (the glass should not sit directly on the stand) will be on the stand only at 2 points instead of 4, adding to the lack of structural integrity even further. If you get a fish tank, get a stand for that size tank (don't skimp here or you will have more issues with water damage).

I wouldn't, no, because the over-hung parts of the tank which are unsupported will have a lot of stress on them, however, there is a chance it could be fine, but I would not risk it, try putting a thin sheet of wood (like MDF) on top of the stand in with the same dimentions as the tank (100x40) - this should distribute the weight more evenly.

the tank alone on the top of the unit will not be safe but you could, (if you wanted to) get yourself down to your nearest DIY shop and buy an inch thick piece of wood (solid, not chipboard or any other crap like that) which would act in the same way as snow shoes do........ it would spread the weight and if you got it the same size as the tank you could paint the edges the same colour so that it can't be noticed easily. if you live in the UK then B&Q are probably your best bet for the decent wood and they will charge you no extra for the first 4 cuts so your cut lines will be perfect.

I wouldnt suggest this as

1. the stand might not be able to hold this
2. the bottom of the tank might not be able to cope

140 litres is 140 KG of weight

Thats like 2 really fat people so think of it that way

I wouldnt trust my tank overhanging as they get very heavy

This looks like a balancing act that people will come a long way to see. I wouldn't recommend this action at all.
