For a 1 - 2 1/2 gallon tank, which is more essential, a sponge filter or a heater?

I have a 10g tank with the following: 3 Male Guppies (Max. Length 1.5 Inches), 2 Male Dwarf Sunrise Coral Platies (Max. Length 1.5 Inches), and 2 Ghost Shrimp (1 Inch).

How does my tank setup sound? Is this a good number of fish?

And does anyone know how to lure fish to somewhere, because 2 of the little ones have gone to the back of my tank (i have a rena aquacube and they have gone to the heater compartment) and i think they like it there but i dont and i would like to move them back and cover up the gap they went through.
When i got the tank i didnt know what this black thing was for, but now i do!

Thanks!

Other than danios, tetras, barbs, dwarf gouramis, cory catfish, killifish, chameleon fish, and marble hatchet fish. Nothing hard just simple. No separating and junk. EASY.

I have one Otocinclus currently but he is very very new and I've heard they are hard to get accimated. If he does do well I might get 1 or 2 others. Would that take care of it or do you have any other suggestions?

Is it possible to tell the difference between male and female harlequins?

Can you tell if a female harlequin is pregnant?

If yes to the latter, can you separate them and then how do you care for the eggs?

Hi, about 4 years ago I bought five small, short-finned zebra danio to keep in a 10 gallon tank. 3 years ago (a year after I bought them), I left on vacation for 2 months and while I was gone my friend watched the tank for me. By the time I got back two of the danio had died and one was sick, I don't know what they had. The third danio died directly after I had returned from vacation, leaving me with only two zebra danios. About 6 months later a different friend decided she did not want her two fancy male guppies any more so I told her I would take them for her. I put them in the tank with my two remaining zebra danios and all seemed fine.
Now, it is 4 years since I bought the danios, 3 years since half of them died, and 2 years 6 months since I added the guppies to the tank.
The tank has always had a heater, filter, and bubbler.
I check the ph levels every week when I replace 25% of the water. And I clean the filter every month.
The fish are fed TetraFin Tropical Flakes once a day.

I purchased some bamboo for my freshwater aquarium a while ago. The person told me if it got too tall (out of the tank, pressing on the glass lid) I could just cut it. Where do i cut it? Can I just cut the stalk in half and new roots will come out??? I know some plants can do that like Hygro but I didnt think that bamboo would survive that kind of maiming. I also thought about cutting the leaves off but that just seems silly and would make those areas rot. Its not the standard "chinese" bamboo thats really small and has small leaves (I apologize for not knowing the Speces name)

It is a thick bamboo stalk and then the leaves are elogated and grow straight up with a slight unfolding. There are streaks of white and green in concentric circles on the leaves. How can I make it smaller?

I really want to know. I think my fish laid eggs and I don't know for sure. I was cleaning the tank when it happened. I was already dumping the water out. They looked like eggs but I'm not positive.

I have a 5 gallon tank. My water is always always 80 degrees. and if i keep my light on for a while it will jump up to 83, or sometimes higher. Everyone says it will cool off if i keep the light off, but it wont! Is 80 too warm for fish to live? is there any way to cool it down? i do not have a heater in it.

All water readings are in normal range.( This has been a problem for about a month now) Have done water changes, did a 50% change about 2 hours ago, (and water already starting to get cloudy). No signs of illness or stress with fish. Haven't lost any fish. Not a pump or filter problem. Overcrowding not the issue. I am well understocked. The only thing I can tell you is that my fish have eaten my plants. I have 1 male swordtail, 2 female swordtails, 3 blackskirts tetra's, 4 neon tetra's, 4 zebra danios, 2 cory cats, and 1 bottom feeder, all in a 40 gallon. Why is the water cloudy and staying cloudy????
