You probably either have a Pictus Catfish or a Spotted Raphael Catfish. Pictus are fairly active, but only if they are kept in large groups. When kept alone or in small groups, they will hide all day and only come out at night. Spotted Raphaels will hide whether or not they are in groups. When buying unlabled Catfish, you always run the risk of getting a hider. Check under all your decorations, in your filter (the holding area and the intake tube), in all your gravel, AND check within about 3 feet of the tank (many Catfish have the ability to breath air using their swim bladder, so it may have been able to flop for a while).

Well, I have experience with that sort of thing, but I don't know what happened. I had 6 albino corydora catfish in my 20 gallon tank and one just suddenly vanished. I never found any corpse or sign that it had died. No bones, no skeleton, no nothing. There are no fish in there that are capable of eating a whole catfish like that and I've never found even a single sign of him. I've cleaned that tank since several times and I still don't have a clue what happened to that fish! All the other five catfish are still healthy and happy. It's a great mystery. Maybe catfish can teleport.

Sounds like you have a Spotted Raph Cat.
Odds are quite good it's still alive - they're nocturnal fish, this is really the only time they're active. So, feed him accordingly at night.

If you have smaller decorations you may consider getting something larger as they can grow to be near 6.5 inches long.

Another word of advice - don't buy creatures you know nothing about, it's poor animal husbandry.
