the pet store is closed
and i was wondering if there is any way i can lower it without any medication.
my alkalinity is high also.
and same thing with the hardness of my water.
but the man at the fish store said not to worry about it cuz the hardness of the water is high in my area [zip code:91506]
anyway to lower the levels without medication?
and its a 20 galon tank

What kind of Cichlids do you have? African Cichlids do best in a high pH (around 8.0-8.5) while SA (South American) Cichlids do best in a low pH (around 6.0-7.0). If you REALLY need to lower it, get a few pieces of driftwood. The wood will leech tannins into the water. These tannins will soften the water as well as GRADUALLY, SAFELY, and STEADILY lower your pH to your desired level. Also, be sure you don't have any limestone, marble, sea shells, or coral in the tank as those will all buffer the pH and hardness, making it more difficult to alter.

~~~AVOID chemical treatments for pH alteration. They are very stressful for the fish because they create a rapidly fluctuating pH that can harm or kill fish.
Without medication, I don't believe you can lower it.
