Soaking it won't help that only removes the tannings, you should bury most of the drift wood into the gravel anchoring it, or tie a rock to it. Mostly drift wood should be able to stay on the bottom by itself.

Just soak it in water in a bucket for at least 2 weeks, then put it into your tank
