I have a 5 gallon tank. My water is always always 80 degrees. and if i keep my light on for a while it will jump up to 83, or sometimes higher. Everyone says it will cool off if i keep the light off, but it wont! Is 80 too warm for fish to live? is there any way to cool it down? i do not have a heater in it.

As has been said already, it depends on the kind of fish. If you have tropical fish (anything that isn't a Goldfish), it is perfectly fine. As GhostShrimpFan said, that small of a variation is harmless.

I am concerned that somebody is proudly advertising their 3 Goldfish (that will eventually be 1.5 feet each and require a POND) and a Plecostomus (that will also reach 1.5 feet and need 55 gallons of water) in their 5 gallon tank. Goldfish are coldwater fish and need temperatures of less than 70 degrees to flourish. Email me if you have any questions.

EDIT: For those fish, it would be better if the water was cooler (around 76-78*). They will be able to tolerate temperatures of 83* for a week or two, but it is very stressful and will promote unusual behavior (temporary loss of color, loss of balance).

You have asked the right person. I have a 5 gallon all glass tank and I have 3 goldfish, one pleco, some shrimp, and about 5 snails that came from one over a month's period, haha. Well I guess my temperature is around 80 too and they seem to be livin' the life. I think it is ok as long as there isnt' any dramatic temp change. Dont worry about it. If the fish seem to swim in an odd way, then you can contact me. Have a good day!

80 is a good temp for most tropical fish. Variations of 3 degrees throughout the day that come about slowly won't hurt them a bit. 83 is nowhere near high enough to hurt them although it will speed up their metabolism a little. I keep my guppy fry about that temperature so that they will grow fast.

Tropical fish would do fine in the water. Fish are cold blooded so their body temperature would be the temperature of the water. It depends on what kind of fish you have.
