Is a 5 gallon hex too small for 4-5 neon tetras and a good looking guppy? Do guppies need to have more than one of their kind in the tank? How many bloodfin tetras could i fit?

Yes, you can put 4-5 neons and a guppy in this tank and they'll survive, as long as you recognize that with the proper decoration for the neons (plants) there will be just enough room for them to be displayed for your viewing pleasure and enough water to keep them alive, but it is lacking room for movement. Guppies do like to be with their own kind, but they don't rely on it the way timid neons do.

Also keep in mind that neons are more sensitive to water quality and unstable water perameters, so you need to take care with such a small tank.

Ignore the inch per gallon 'rules', or at least use it with caution and a good dose of common sense - its only a rule in some peoples minds, but not in the real world, where there are many aspects to be considered and such basic and simplified rules won't work except with small sized fish in standard tanks - one previous poster was absolutely correct about the shape of a hex not giving as much living space as a standard 5 gallon tank would.

The problem with a 5 gallon hex (and most hexes for that matter) is small surface area for the volume, not to mention this is a tiny tank. 4-5 neons will be a little stressed and a guppy would definitely leave it overstocked. Guppies would prefer to be with more than 2-3 of their own kind. The bloodfin tetras would go nuts being so confined.
Look for a tank at least 20 gallons as a good starter tank. 20 high as a complete kit can end up under $125.

Absolutely DO NOT follow the "1 inch of fish per gallon of water" "rule". It simply is not applicable in most situations because there are so many variables (waste production, aggression, swimming level, oxegen necessity, tank dimensions, activity level, water parameters, filtration, and many others). In such a small tank, it would be best if you just kept one or two species. Either get 5 Neon Tetras and a Betta, or 3 MALE Guppies (if there are any females present, you will have innumerable worthless babies). Another option would be a Betta and a few White Cloud Minnows. Bloodfin Tetras grow to about 2 inches and are schooling fish, so they aren't going to do well in a 5 gallon tank. Just stick to really small, slow moving fish like Bettas and Neons, or Guppies. Email me if you have any questions.

youre good with what you have just add one more guppy so the other one can have a companion then your fish tank would be complete no need for all the other useless information thats too technical and complicated.

By rule of thumb one inch of fish per gallon .

I would say five fishes maximum .....4 would be best .

Try two tetras and two guppies (one male one female). Or your choice of 4 fish maximum.

I don't know, I have an Oscar, and Red Belly. I don't toy around with the smaller tanks.
