Fish - March 2007

Hi all,

I recently got my Juwel Vision 260 tank back. I had to pretty much start from scratch again setting it up. I bought a few rocks, a wooden log and a few plants from the pet store. They all went in the tank last Wednesday, after giving everything a soak in water before hand.

Today however, I have noticed blobs of clear jelly stuff growing in random places on the wood log, but no where else. I don't know what it is or where it's come from. In another pet store I went in to, I saw a set up tank and pretty much everything seemed to have this substance covering it.

Any ideas to what this is or how I can get rid of it?

There are currently no fish in the aquarium either!

Cheers,
Julie

my fish have ich, (white spots on there body/fins)
ive been doing the treatment since tuesday and i havent seen any change as yet! my clown loaches are covered in the stuff and one of them has like a moss growing on him now (as well as the white spots) he really doesnt look well at all, i think he may die very soon! from some of the answers on yahoo, ive gone with what i thinks the best. so this morning, i did a 20% water change, turned the temp upto 77f, turned my filter off and put the treatment in. can you tell me if i have done this right? also should i turn the temp up higher?
thanks in advance

I had a coldwater goby about a year ago, as a new fish owner I was unaware of the many different types and different names of each fish so don't know the common or latin name.
I have tried researching this subject but keep getting confused, I think I had a desert goby from looking at some pictures. No-one seems to know what I am talking about and a few fish shop people have flat out denied there is a coldwater goby.
I live in England so I need to know of the gobys available here. My dearly departed goby was about 2.5cm and I would like 1 of similar size. Any suggestions? please include latin names as some shop have said they order in latin and if they don't know the common name then tough basically.
Also this may seem silly, but when people say freshwater do they mean freshwater tanks, ponds or rivers etc?
Does anyone know any good websites?

Fish are easily the most often abused and mistreated of all pets. You could never find someone that would tell you they bought 10 dogs and they all died in a week! Or few if any other animals for that matter!

I believe this is largely due to the fact that many people are poorly educated on how to properly care for fish, and in many cases don't even see them as "pets"...just as a piece of furniture.

Which brings me to another question. Does the aquarium industry intentionally give little to no information to their customers? Do they thrive off the cycle off uninformed customers coming back to buy more and more fish? I know for a fact that fish stores see clueless customers as big money...i worked at one.

If you buy a dog/cat you will find the seller will spend hours with you telling you everything you need to know and educating you about the breeds etc. Why isn't it the same for fish?

I have 5 fish: an all-orange variety gourami (I don't know the actual type), a hatchet fish, two neon tetras, and an african dwarf frog. I have had these fish in the same tank for almost two months now. Within the past month or so, I've noticed that the gourami lunges at and chases the hatchet fish a lot. I've never seen him try to attack any of the other fish. Are gouramis normally aggressive? When I got him, it said "peaceful community fish." The hatchet fish is obviously stressed out from being chased around all the time. I also think the hatchet is afraid to eat around the gourami, because he seems to eat a lot less. Also, a small red spot has appeared on (or inside) his body. Is that a sign of a serious problem? Is there anything I can do to keep the gourami from attacking the hatchet? I'm really tight on funds right now, so I can't buy a new tank, and I really don't want to get rid of one of them. Please help. :(

the local chinese buffett place where i live has i think a 55 gallon long tank. it is as wide as a 29 gal, but 1.5 times longer. the water looks like ****, and they have about a 16inch arrowana in it and 3 6-7 inch koi. i do not think they take care of the fish in there, a wile bak ther was about a 12 in koi with the arrowana, but i guess it died. and they replaced it with 3 smaller ones. does this sound bad or what?

my sucking loach (scooter) jumped out of his tank some time when i was out of the house...which was for 5 or six hours....i then came home to seeing scooter on the floor five feet away from my 15 gallon tank. His gills were moving so i put him in the tank and moved him back and forth for a bit and he started pulsing and swiming around a bit....i then put him on the bottom of the tank with his gills still moving...first question- is it possible for him to survive? second question- is there anything else i can do to treat him and nurse him back to life?

my aquarium alwyas has a high pH (about 7.4 to7.6) and sometimes even a bit higher, but usually in the range that i have just given.

i have tried to keep it down, and i would like to get it as close to neutral as possible. i prepare the water before hand and put stuff in it to make it more acidic, but its hard coz the water where i live is naturally hard.

is water with a higher pH bad for fish??? i have lost 3 so far and i didint do anything worng ( al least i dont think i did...)
could this be due to pH or sometihng else. i check the ammonia and its always 0.

how do i keep it down and can i do any damage to fish?

p.s. i put salt in the water so my fish dont get fungus! it works!
could this be affectong pH?

I had the powerhead in my salt water tank unplugged and forgot to plug it back in. When I finally realized, 1 clown was gasping at the surface and the other is lying on the coral gasping away. I dont know how my starfish is, but its alive...

The starfish hasnt moved in the last hours, and both clowns are still gasping away for over an hour.

I did airate the tank and got it well oxigated, but Im worried I've just killed my clowns and starfish.

Im pretty upset...please dont be rude- I know Im a moron to forget.

Please ONLY answer if youre an expereinced aquarist.

Thoughts on their chances of survival appreciated.
