Bettas are also called Siamese fighting fish and Siam is in the country of Thailand.
HOWEVER, the name of the fish in thai is "pla kat khmer", which means "fin-biter in khmer", and the Khmer was the former name of cambodia. Research also says that bettas were brought from khmer to thailand to limit the pests in paddy fields(which is not little puddle, they're vast paddies), and that was where most of the selective breeding took place.

eastern asia, like thailand and such, as MM said.
despite popular belief they do NOT live in muddy footprints. they live in rice paddies which are very large, just shallow. each betta has his own LARGE territory. there is a short dry season where the water dries up and they have less room, but it's still not a puddle. some even live in slow moving streams.
if they lived in puddle how would they mate? I can't picture them jumping from puddle to puddle looking for a mate.
hope that answers your question :)

Thailand....... which was once Siam.... hence Siamese fighting fish. But most of the bettas in the hobby are bred in captivity for their bright colors and long fins.
