Hi all,

I recently got my Juwel Vision 260 tank back. I had to pretty much start from scratch again setting it up. I bought a few rocks, a wooden log and a few plants from the pet store. They all went in the tank last Wednesday, after giving everything a soak in water before hand.

Today however, I have noticed blobs of clear jelly stuff growing in random places on the wood log, but no where else. I don't know what it is or where it's come from. In another pet store I went in to, I saw a set up tank and pretty much everything seemed to have this substance covering it.

Any ideas to what this is or how I can get rid of it?

There are currently no fish in the aquarium either!

Cheers,
Julie

My best guess would be dormant snail eggs that have started gestating since being put in water.

Take the wood out and scrub it with a NEW clean tooth brush and a little aquarium salt to kill anything that is growing on it, and let it air dry overnight before putting it back in the tank.

Good Luck.
E.

when i was trying to make sure there were no snails/snail eggs on my driftwood that i bought from my LFS, i was recommended to dip it in a mild bleach solution (1part bleach/19 parts water) for about 2 minutes. (i also was worried about ich, and bleach can kill both eggs and parasites, i was told).
anyway, the dip did kill some of my plants (java moss and elodea) but didn't harm any of the rest (the anubias nana growing on the driftwood is doing great; i also have some pennywort and some cryptos)
i would suggest trying that. just make a really weak bleach solution, soak your driftwood in it for about 2 minutes, then rinse it really really (really) well.

i've heard recommendations for aquarium salt in warm water scrubbed with a toothbrush too, but since i haven't tried that method yet i don't have any personal experience to give.

i've gotten some of my best advice from the Aquaria Central freshwater forums - both reading the old questions and answers and through asking my own stuff. i highly recommend it! http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/
you might have to register to read or post, but its worth it.

good luck!

ps: planted tanks are so much fun! don't listen to the people who say the work is too hard - get some easy plants that are made for the conditions your tank already has, and they'll grow themselves! my fish love them and the tank is hypnotic with so much life in there. Aquatic plants also help to take even more harmful waste products from the water (not a replacement for cleaning, mind you) - they'll eat some of your nitrates! Go Plants! You Rock! :)

if it's a true wood log it will decay. so change it to a plastic type. also I dont use live plant in mine either. alot easier for up keep
