Fish - March 2007

Like fake orchids from wal-mart or the dollar store. Sometimes I see some really nice ones and know they would look so exotic and cool in the tank. But would they degrade in the water, or poison the fish with the glue used to attach them to the stem? Anybody else ever done this?

I have a tank with 3 mpimbwe frontosa's, a parrotfish, and 2 clown loaches. I have a smaller tank with a small convict in it. Can I put the convict in with the others or will they try to kill each other? The convict is a little smaller than the rest of them.

I just set up my 55 gal tank the other day. I have 2 goldfish in there but since evryone has said to take them out, I just want to start over. What fish should I buy first? How long inbetween putting them in the tank should I wait before adding more species?

I just setup a 55 gal tank a few days ago and I put 2 golfish in it. They are loving it. I slowly raised the temp to 75. What other fish should I put in? I would like a few suckers and some colorful fish. How many days should you leave in between mixing species?

I just started a 90 Gal salt water fish tank. I was told Mollies are a good fish to help season my tank. I called petsmart and was told it was REALLY bad to have them in there. I had them for about a week and then I noticed one of them had babies. Does that mean that my fish are happy in the tank? I know when the momma gets stressed she can abort her babies. Do I have anything to worry about?

I got up this morning to a slightly cloudy tank and blackish looking algae in the crevices of rocks and on a white shell in my tank. What happened so suddenly?

I have:

20 gallon tank
77 degrees
I use Cycle
cleaned every 2 weeks
softened well water
have : albino cory, plateco (sp?) algae eater, platy, albino african frog, weather loach, and a betta in this tank.
PH 8.0 (normal water ph in my area and fish are accustomed to it)
When I took the tank partly apart to clean some of the black algae off, alot of old food swirled around. I have never had a prob with overfeeding if this is the prob. Would overfeeding cause black algae to grow?

Thoughtful answers only please, rude ones will be reported.

Thanks in advance!

My goldfish swims right up to me when I'm near his tank. Then he hovers there looking right up at me as though to say "please, feed me." He spends all of the rest of his time foraging for food off of the plants and bottom of the tank or just swimming around. I swear he's begging.

I found a dead pleko with furry mold growing on him and I'm afraid he's been dead so long the tank could be poisoned. Do I change all the water and start over? What do I do with my fish till it cycles if I can't do it with them in there?

i have a 16.5 gal tank and had 5 platies in there. Then one of my femlaes had fry, which i put in another tank as i didnt want them to be eaten, i have put 7 back into the tank, so there are 12 in there now... is this too many. Im taking the other 20 or so fry to the aquatic shop next week as i dont have room for them, so do i need to give some of my 12 up too?
currently i test the water every week and its always really good, i test for ammonia and nitrites and there are no readings. I feed them for four days, and leave them for a day without food, and then start feeding again. I have a fluval 2 plus filter which keeps the water very clear, i do a water change once a week with a gravel vac, so i hope i can keep them all...but obviously dont want to if they are over croweded...what do you guys think??

We were given a fish tank and it has a white film all over it. Lime maybe? I've been trying to clean it with vinegar, but it's not doing much good. When the tank is wet, it seems to "disappear". So I'm wondering if it will be visible when the tank is full of water.

Thanks!

The water will be as clear as day, but when I add new water(the water evaporates) it clouds up. If I change the water and add new it clouds up. It will clear up again in 2-3 days but it's annoying. My fish are mostly tetra's, and they seem ok. I got the tank over a month ago.

I've had my Betta for a few months now. He's in my community tank which is kept at 78 degrees. I feed him Betta food every day and I also see him nibbling at the goldfish pellets that fall to the bottom of the tank after feeding.

My problem: He hasnt grown at all since I bought him. Im only wondering about this because I've seen bigger Bettas in those little cups at Walmart (which is ridiculous) so I'm just wondering why mine isnt as big. Hes a fairly healthy Betta, recognizes me when I stand by the tank and he openly lets me know when he's hungry. Any suggestions? Oh and his body (without tail) measures 1 inch and a quarter.

Here's a picture of him:

ok so our first male crown tail betta died of natural causes and we had a crow tail female (da boss) and another plain female. the three above got along well in our community so when he just up and died we decided to get another. so we got another male about the same size and put him in. at first it seemed like da boss was just testing so we went to bed. bad mistake. when i woke up he was on the bottom of the 55 with no gills no hood no fins no mouth and barly any scales.. what happened??
