I have 3 female platies and 2 males in a 20 gallon tank. Both males always chase this one female all the time! i don't want her to get stressed out, so do i need to buy more females? Why don't they chase the other two females, and why are both guys after one girl? Should i be concerned about this, or is it normal?

First off this is not a question about how to cycle tanks, rather its a question about how come a large portion of fish owners dont know about this most crucial part of keeping fish.

At first i thought Aquarium owners were just plain lazy to look it up and try to get the best for their fish, but then i went to petco, petsmart, and about a dozen more chain pet stores and i asked to speak to the fish "specialist". I asked the following questions and he gave the following answers.
Question 1-what is tank cycling
Answer 1-when you buy goldfish and put them in you tank so your tank doesnt get dirty
Question 2-how will goldfish make your tank not dirty
Answer 2-they will eat the poop
Question 3-so let me get this straight, they will eat their own poop.
Answer 3-um... no... not exactly. Hold on let me go get my supervisor/

One gallon is not that big but I've heard that beta fish prefer small spaces? Is this true and are there any others types like this. I want to put at least two in the gallon bowl so they won't be lonely. Is this ok?

I notice when i was cleaning out his tank that one eye was extremely larger than the other. Is this an infection or illness. What percautions should I take to insure his health.

My goldfish has been mostly inactive (except feedings) the past few days and has been hanging out by the heater... I thought the tank might be too cold, so I turned it up a notch (about 5 degrees warmer), but it hasn't changed its behavior. It normally wanders around the tank a lot but hasn't been the past couple of days. He recently had an Ick infestation, but I took care of that and it's been a couple of weeks since then... what could it be? It's a baby goldie (1.5 inches) in a 1-gallon tank (going to upgrade as soon as he reaches 2 inches) and there are places for him to play in. He usually likes to play in the bubbles, but hasn't even been doing that either. Help!

I fed my oscar some goldfish from a local fair (I know big mistake). He has been laying on his side for almost a week and doesn't move around much. Is there anything I can do to save him? I really want to save him! Thanks.

P.S. Yes the tank is big enough and we have had him for 2.5 years.

My Platy has something wrong with his gills. They are all puffed out. It looks like when a human gets goose bumps, but on a fish. It is wierd, I have no idea what is wrong with him. I really dont want him to die! I have had him for years. My mom says that it is a bacterial infection. I cleaned out the tank 2 days ago. Do you think it is stressed?

Ok. my betta fish just spawned today, with the female dropping about 10-20 eggs. I was so excited, but do you know what happened? Nothing, the male did not pick up the eggs off the floor of the 10 gallon tank. There is no gravel on the bottom either. Help me, what should i do, they did so about 20 minutes ago and its still down there!

I have outdoor, tiled tank, about 2m X .5m X .8m deep. I have carp (about 20 cm), fancy goldfish (about 10 cm) and guppies. I get some guppy fry but not as many as I'd expect. I have plastic intricate fern-like plants in one area I'd hoped they would use as a nursery. Also some sucker fish (look like a 747 and shark mix) which have grown huge!

Do guppy fry stand a chance? Will goldfish breed in these conditions? I am in the tropics, not too far from the Equator.

I usually feed the fish all they will eat in 5 minutes, about 3 times a day.

I'm trying to breed my bettas and they are still chasing each other around...well the male keeps chasing her. As people who breed know that we have to put half a styrofoam cup in the tank...well my female keeps running onto the cup!! like literally stuck, I keep having to knock on the glass before she'd jump off...is this okay?? I dunno what to do...

I'm new at this aquarium. It's time to clean this aquarium of mine. I was wondering what do I need and how do I clean it. Is distilled water ok? How do I add the new water to it? Do I need to put dechlorinater and the conditioner first and let it sit for a few minutes or hours? Thanks a bunch!

Some bubbles go up into the collection chamber, but a lot go back into the aquarium. I have a Skilter power filter/skimmer. I was under the impression that the bubbles trap harmful stuffs and send it to the collection chamber, but this doesn't help much if the bubbles go back into the aquarium, correct?

im setting up a tank right now and it has a 20-40 gallon filter and its a 29 gallon tank.

i want to know if i can take the old filter media out of a smaller 5-15 gallon filter on my established 10 gallon tank and just put in it even though it wont take up the entire inside of the cartrige holder inside the filter?
will this hurt my filter or make it like overfill and make water go everywhere, or will it help me get bacteria in my new tank?

thanks
