Fish - March 2007

I just recently set up an aquarium with an reg. goldfish, an oranda goldfish, a catfish and 2 plecos. As stated on the question heading, why does my oranda have a white trailing on is head that looks like it's oozing out of it. Is that a sign of Ich? I've been treating the aquarium with Nox-ich. Plus it doesn't look like it's sick. Please help, I don't want another gold fish to die. I had one die on me? I like this one. It's my favorite.

I have been considering buying a small glass aquarium for a few fish, but I have a few questions/concerns.
Firstly, how often do you have to clean the tank? Secondly, how much does an average tank cost (a smaller one to fit 3 - 5 fish)?
10 points will be awarded to anyone that can help me with this question. If you give me any extra tips when it comes to having an aquarium, you may be more likely to receive a best answer and it will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

well i have a 55 gallon with a 6 1/2 inch bala shark, and 6 inch columbian shark(catfish), 5 inch knife fish, and 4 black skirt tetras. when my tank started leaking out i didn't know what to do, so i left it alone for how many weeks maybe month(s) or so, then the leak got sealed by itself, the reason i didn't move or did something was, i didn't know what to do because the leak is coming from under the tank which is really a lot of stress for me to move my fish into a container and seal the tank for maybe a week or so, it might kill my fish so i didn't do it. good thing about though was, the leak was sealed unknowingly maybe because i didn't do any water changes or whatever that may give weight on entire tank, the tank lost about 1/4 of its original water level. Now the problem is, i haven't done a weekly water changes since the leak came and was sealed, i was afraid to do any water change thinking it might break the glass underneath. Now i noticed that my columbian cat is... continued

I have tried almost everything that I know of and yet there is still green. Do you know of any good products or even home remedies to get rid of it? It is a freshwater tank with tropical fish.

I have a 10 gallon planted tank and sand on the bottom. The temperature is at 78-80 degrees. I'm trying to get my Betta to breed. I threw in a fake floating leaf and my Betta started making a huge bubble nest under that leaf. He cares for it everyday by adding a little more bubbles. I recently went and purchased a female and had her put into the same tank as my male Betta was in. After a day of being together, the male would chase the female alot. The female would not be attracted to the male's bubble nest. But as we speak the bubble nest is getting bigger.

My question is..

Is this female I bought suitable for mating?
Should I buy another female and try the same process?

Thanks
Jason

hi everyone. i have a male beta at home and he hasnt eaten for about a week. i have had him since new years and he was fine, but within the last week or so he hasnt been eating and he has been like layong at the bottom of his bowl just on top of the rocks and not moving at all, just breathing and then if i shake the bowl a little he will float up to the top and then kind of sink back down. it looks like he has no energy. and also like the last few days i noticed that bits of his tail are floating in the bowl. does all this mean he's dying? what can i do because i am very attached to my little blueberry and i dont want him to die.

I have a 55 gallon tank but it seems like my fish keep dying and i dont know why. this is my first time having fish and i am 21! but anywho, i had a pleco that was acting like it was retarded, and what i mean by that is he would jump out of the water and hit his head on the lid of the tank. after that he died like a day later. then i went to get other fish after i cleaned my tank and put start right in it. i went to the store and got 3 mollies, and a red tailed black shark. all of the mollies died within the first 24 hours i had them, but my shark is still alive. And are fish supposed to have bellies?

I could physically remove them but it would always leave a few I missed and then the problem returns. Looking for fish that will eat them or a chemical that will kill them.

He's out of sunlight. I enjoy watching him with the light but have noticed that he does all of his swimming around the outside edge of the orb (4 gal Biorb) where the light doesn't shine. The light also heats his water a little to about 80 degrees. Just read Dr. Dope saying it is a golden rule of Bettas to not put a hood with light on a Betta. My Betta (Michael) has lots of plants and a fake coral to hide in. Would he be happier and healthier if I kept his light off? I think his water would cool to room temperature which is about 72-74 degrees. You can't put a heater in this tank. (I don't keep the light on all of the time. Turn it off at night for about 8 hours.)

My betta fish that I have at home has been flaring at me since the death of my younger betta fish. I've changed his bowl, put lighting around it, and even gave him three Hikari Betta pellets as his diet, ontop of a little pinch of food. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with him, because before he would flare, and then I'd stare at him, and see what was wrong, and be able to change it so he's happy, but everything I seem to do seems virtually impossible. I'm also thinking it's the fact that he wants a girlfriend, but I don't have the proper enviroment for both him and a female... what do I do?

Sorry this is so long...

I'm moving my fish about 12 miles this week. This is my first time moving aggressive fish. I have xingu pike, green terror, convicts, helodes loaches, angelicus loaches, bengal loaches, L56 chubby pleco, and rubber lip plecos.

Should I use some sort of sedative like clove oile for the move to keep them from attacking each other during the trip? I got 3 big boxes from the LFS, but they're still awfully close quarters for such an angry collection of fish.

its becoming a serious problem with me , if i see any dirt or uneaten food i have to do a quick 10% water change, i put in a small amount of food in the morning, but they dont come out to eat until its been in the tank for more then five minutes, then the food just gets messed up and bits are left , its cichlid pellets, and also my pleco never finds his disc, ive tried the once that stick to the inside of the tank and also sinking once they make a mess, i hate mess? so im doing little water changes nearly everday, is this bad, they seem happy enough, oh yes im using water softner as well?

I had never heard this until recently. I know that bettas Don't NEED large areas like a 5 to 10 gallon tank, but are happier when they are in them. What I recently heard is that if you give them more room than they are used to, they need alot more plants so that they have room to hide and feel secure.... kinda the same way a newborn likes to be swaddled I guess. Anyways, do you think it's true or not?
