He's out of sunlight. I enjoy watching him with the light but have noticed that he does all of his swimming around the outside edge of the orb (4 gal Biorb) where the light doesn't shine. The light also heats his water a little to about 80 degrees. Just read Dr. Dope saying it is a golden rule of Bettas to not put a hood with light on a Betta. My Betta (Michael) has lots of plants and a fake coral to hide in. Would he be happier and healthier if I kept his light off? I think his water would cool to room temperature which is about 72-74 degrees. You can't put a heater in this tank. (I don't keep the light on all of the time. Turn it off at night for about 8 hours.)

This is a filtered, aerated aquarium.

Sounds like a nice betta set up to me. That light level should be just fine.

Your tank sounds fine...Bettas do not mind the light...And the heat is great for them also...If the temp drops to low they can get very curved and s shaped and it looks painful..I found keeping the temperature between 75-80 my Bettas are very happy and healthy....I keep all my tanks...tropical and cichlid at this temperature...Small Betta tanks if you check the temperature are around 75-80 with no heater...Good Luck with your friend..:o)

Eighty degrees is too warm for a betta (and many tropical fish as well).

Bettas in the wild live in dark, vegetation-filled water which is not very oxygenated.

I would take out the light.

Sounds fine. As long as hes got a place to hide then fine. What I was going say is watch the temp. You will be surprised how fast a light bulb can heat up water like that. Other than that I say its fine. Shut it off at night before bed I don't see no harm!

From my experience, a light is good as they do need constant warmth. Don't ever let them get cold. You can get "blankets" for the tanks (little things that stick on the side and I dunno how, but help keep the heat in).
I dunno what size your tank is (not sure what a 4 gal etc. is), but I know they don't like having too much room, so make sure that he's not just swimming in that corner due to the tank being too big.

He's fine as is. Probably happier than most bettas also.
