I had never heard this until recently. I know that bettas Don't NEED large areas like a 5 to 10 gallon tank, but are happier when they are in them. What I recently heard is that if you give them more room than they are used to, they need alot more plants so that they have room to hide and feel secure.... kinda the same way a newborn likes to be swaddled I guess. Anyways, do you think it's true or not?

Extra plants are really required exactly, but they do go a long way to making the fish feel comfortable as you read. Never hurts to have a few extra, but as long as the fish has a place to hide when it feels it needs it your ok.

I don't know if it is true that they absolutely need plants to get acclimated, but I do know for sure that a betta's tank sould be planted with a medium amount of plants. Not too heavy. This goes for the tank area that you have, fill the bottom to a densly planted level, but not too much. You need to be able to see the bottom of the tank as well. Another favorite betta decoration is rock structures you may use some of these to replace some of the plants.

Hope this helps.

I have Betta's and have researched them greatly!!!! They will love live plants, plus they oxygenate the water and keep Mr. Betta healty. If you want to give your betta something to do and make him feel like he has a purpose do this...

Take a styrofoam cup and cut it in half from top to bottom. now tape it to the side of the tank so it floats on the top of the water but doesn't float away(it will look like a cave). Mr. Betta will fill it with bubbles because he will think its time to breed/mate...while your at it why don't you give him a Mrs. Betta (research this, don't just drop a female into the tank).

I have a betta in a 30g community tank with pristella tetras & guppies. I only have a few baby mats flipped upside down for him to hide in & he does fine with a lot of open swimming space. He seems a lot happier than when he was in his 1g vase. I think more than cover plants the speed of the water is important. Just don't make it so fast that he has to fight the current constantly.

bettas do like a big area considering the area they are native from they have thousands of gallons and betta like plants and driftwood and rice stalks. Not exactly true but they need their hiding places. And remember the golde betta rule NEVER PUT A BEETA IN A SUNLIT AREA OR USE A HOOD bettas have extremally sencitive skin and can be killed by sunlight or artificial sunlight so keep em in a shady area.
