I have a 55 gallon tank but it seems like my fish keep dying and i dont know why. this is my first time having fish and i am 21! but anywho, i had a pleco that was acting like it was retarded, and what i mean by that is he would jump out of the water and hit his head on the lid of the tank. after that he died like a day later. then i went to get other fish after i cleaned my tank and put start right in it. i went to the store and got 3 mollies, and a red tailed black shark. all of the mollies died within the first 24 hours i had them, but my shark is still alive. And are fish supposed to have bellies?

Ok, I have a filter, and a water heater, and a thermometer in my tank. The pet store said that I could have my shark with my mollies. And my husbands dad used to own a fish store and he sets up the tank for me. gets everything ready and all that stuff, he comes over once a week to check things out. and what i mean about the belly thing is, my mickey mouse platy is getting really fat, and the others were doing that too am i feeding them too much?

It soulds like you might have a problem with your water supply. Take a sample to the pet store and have them check it. You could also have a problem with your fish store and be getting bad fish or other problems, but it's more likely to be a water quality problem. If that's the problem post another quesiton with the details of the water test and someone can certainly help you figure out a good correction.

Check your chemical levels before you add fish. Most fish stores will do this for free if you bring in a cup or so of the water. Also, you should be doing a 10-20% water change weekly to keep the chemical levels right.

You need some literature. Aquariums for Dummies is a good start. I'm not calling you a dummy there is just A LOT of things you need to know about keeping a tank and fish.

unfortunatly, fish die when trying tokeep them, whether in salt water or fresh water.

i know having fish is fun as i have had a few times, but too many die, no matter how good you are.

my belief is that fish should just be left free in the rivers or oceans where they can live free and not die insomeone's aquarium. instead they can die in society's pollted rivers or eaten by a shark.

you will always have hardship with fishkeeping, no matter what you do.

i say, give it up and get a hamster instead.

Water is a main key to keep fish happy sometime. It have to do with cleaning, un-ieking and temperature have to be just right. Food-not too much or too little.

When I had my first tank I had the same problem. The way to fix this is to put some feeder fish in the tank.Their has to be some kind of algie in the tank for the fish to live off of.Try this I bet it works. And yes Fish do have bellies.:)
