Goldfish will mature at about 1 - 1 1/2 yrs. The male gets tubercules (they look like pimples) on the gill covers and along the front edge of their fins. See photo for examples: http://www.bristol-aquarists.org.uk/goldfish/info/sexing-fs.htm

im sorry goldfish dont get white spots on tail when ready to breed! its called breeding stars and they get them on the gill covering. any white spots on tail would need attention. males will develope these breeding stars when they are reading to spawn. the male will chase the female around like crazy! she will then release her eggs. i breed orandas and have 4 week old fry. go www.kokosworld its the best goldfish site out there! im a full member there with my own pics of my goldies and fry. good luck! i forgot to add they will get the stars on the edges of their pectoral fins as well.

Goldfish are not sexually mature until they are 1 year old.
The female goldfish has a fanned fin and the male has a fin that sticks out
Also when ready a male goldfish will get white spots on his tail. Just his tail though anywhere else and it means they are sick.
