If you really want algae, use bright lighting (or sunlight, but this can heat up your tank) and do water changes less often (or add an aquarium fertilizer without aquarium plants).
If you just want to feed your snails, you can buy algae wafers or feed them slices of zucchini, lettuce, cucumber, etc. that you weight down with some gravel or a stone.
Your fish would prefer you use the second method.

Put it by a window without direct light, you will have more than you bargained for....but you can buy algae pellets at the pet store to feed them with as well....they don't need much. I buy the pellets for my Pleco as he keeps the tank very clean. Word of warning about snails....get only one. They can reproduce by themselves, and soon you will have millions and millions and millions of little tiny snails....look into algae eater fish, if this isn't what you want.

You don't want snails. I thought it would be nice to have a "couple", that quickly turned to hundreds! I was scooping them out by the handful. They take over your tank very fast & you can't get rid of them. I had to buy a couple of little snail eating fish to get rid of them. They cleaned the tank out fast. Snails are bad news.
