My betta fish that I have at home has been flaring at me since the death of my younger betta fish. I've changed his bowl, put lighting around it, and even gave him three Hikari Betta pellets as his diet, ontop of a little pinch of food. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with him, because before he would flare, and then I'd stare at him, and see what was wrong, and be able to change it so he's happy, but everything I seem to do seems virtually impossible. I'm also thinking it's the fact that he wants a girlfriend, but I don't have the proper enviroment for both him and a female... what do I do?

Sorry this is so long...

I agree with several of the others, the flaring is a good thing. A happy comfortable betta flares a lot. You're doing just fine and he's happy as can be.

Betta are not fish-friendly. I have four of them living each in their own 4gallon vase or bowl(I was lucky to find the bowls, they're huge and offer space and beauty!)

Most of the time, they can see each other and will flare, but when I come in the room, they stop and stare like I'm going to feed them. Its kind of the puppy dog look, but its cute as heck.

Getting another betta would make your current betta stressed, especially if you put them in the same tank! That would be a terrible idea.

Try feeding less. Feed him once or twice a day, two pellets at a time. My betta loves feeding time, as sometimes he gets baby mealworms(the ones you can hardly see).

Good luck with your betta and have fun! (try to go to the Vase section in walmart if you have your betta in a small bowl/betta tank. The vases are only 2-6$ and worth it! There's so much room and they really enjoy it)

he's flaring because he's excited, happy, and defending his little territory.

i've found bettas to be more people orientated than fish orientated, they're far more interested in what i'm doing than their neighbours or tankmates, mainly to see if i'm going to feed them...greedy little beggars.

your betta does not need a girlfriend, they would need to be kept seperately anyway.

it does sound like you're over feeding him a bit though. mine only get 2 - 4 pellets a day, overfeeding of pellet/flake foods can cause constipation and swimbladder problems.

Flaring doesn't necessarily mean something's wrong with your betta. If anything it means, "Hey, mom! Lookit me! I'm a big tough guy full of energy and attitude!" It's a sign of health and vigor.

A more worrisome situation would be if he stopped flaring and became listless. Bettas flare when they're feeling competitive and ready for a fight, and thus healthy. A loss of that energy and confidence is a sign that they aren't feeling too great.

Do not put two male bettas together for any reason, they'll tear each other apart.

Ahh.. if you get another betta and put it in the same tank they will fight to the death... I wouldn't recomend that unless you wanna watch them fight... and that's just sad!
