smear a thin coating of vaseline on it then put it on the tank. It will always look wet then but with no water damage to stuff under the tank.

Generally cleaning the tank first, before applying the background will help. I mean, getting rid of the excess algae on the inside. Backgrounds stay on very secure if pulled tight and tape is applied to the ends. I do not recommend Vaseline as it is a petroleum product that will eventually break down the background. If you wish to see the background clearly, maybe it is also time to change the aquarium bulb. This can make a great difference in brightness.

cut a piece of cardboard or posterboard the exact size of the back of your aquarium. Be sure not to cut it so its over the rim surrounding the top of the tank. It must sit on the GLASS ONLY! Then put your background on the glass first followed by the cardboard. The backgrounds are plastic and tend to bow as they usually come on rolls. Its really hard to straighten them without wrinkling them, then they look like hell. Then tape it carefully. You may want to use a thicker clear tape. You can get this at Walmart, Home Depot or Lowes. Tape the sides securely. This should fix you up...You may also want to consider just painting the back of your tank a nice light blue or green. Then the items in your tank show more and the paleness of background gives more contrast to the colors of your fish....good luck.

What you can do is use something to stick the background directly to the back of the tank. Use something with a similar effect as water but will not dry up. Vegetable oil is perfect for this. It is organic so it is safe if some of it manages to get into the tank, it sticks the background on just fine, and it is easy to clean up if you decide on a different background. I do this myself and many aquarists do it as well. Remember, a little bit goes a long way.
Vaseline is great as well, but if you ever decide to change the background it is a pain to clean up.

for a good background you can put a mirror at the back of the tank with some form of decoration( twigs leaves, plants) in between the back of the tank and the mirror, the tank looks a lot deeper and the background is undesturbed.you can change it whenever you want, to something different
