i have a 16.5 gal tank and had 5 platies in there. Then one of my femlaes had fry, which i put in another tank as i didnt want them to be eaten, i have put 7 back into the tank, so there are 12 in there now... is this too many. Im taking the other 20 or so fry to the aquatic shop next week as i dont have room for them, so do i need to give some of my 12 up too?
currently i test the water every week and its always really good, i test for ammonia and nitrites and there are no readings. I feed them for four days, and leave them for a day without food, and then start feeding again. I have a fluval 2 plus filter which keeps the water very clear, i do a water change once a week with a gravel vac, so i hope i can keep them all...but obviously dont want to if they are over croweded...what do you guys think??

16.5 gallon - gravel plants and decoraction for water displacement, 12 is good. this still allows your fish room for growth.

Sounds like you are keeping up on a good maintenance schedule so I think you are limited out now.

Congrad's on your babies!

With the water change schedule that you maintain your 12 Platies should be OK,and should grow rapidly. A fasting day out of 4 is also a good idea. I think your fishkeeping methods are very good. Keep up the good work.------PeeTee

Hello,

Let me share something... It's a FACT... not theory...
I have a densely planted 20 gallon tank, aerated with 1 airstone with 3 pregnant marigold platies in it. I was out of town for 2 weeks and I had to ask my friend to take care of them for awhile.

They gave birth to 100 or more fry and because my friend didn't know what to do, he left them there and just feed them daily. Believe it ot Not...They are now 1 cm in size and doing well. 100 more fish in 20 gallon. And nobody test my ammonia, etc.

But of course.... stick to the 1 inch of fish per gallon rule if you want your fish to grow best, stay healthy and live comfortably.

Good luck!

12 fish in your tank is not a problem, as long as you are keeping up on maintenance, and water changes they will be fine.

Good Luck.

The general rule of thumb is one inch of fish per gallon of water. So, in a 16 gallon tank you could have 16 one-inch fish or eight two-inc fish, etc.

you could proabably put a few more in their if you wanted to and they should be fine, you can have ine inch of fish per gallon of water, so you would be fine with the 12 fish in their :)

I would say just make sure you have one fish per gallon. So 16 fish would be a good limit to stop..if you have one or to over it's ok. but you don't want to over crowd them
