Hello,

It is better to keep them in shaded room, not too dark but definitely not under the sun without any shades.
I used to breed bettas, i had more sickly bettas when kept in dark room, i had less bettas got sick if kept under the sun (but of course with some shades) and provided the bowl is large enough so it won't overheat quickly.

But the best... when kept in warm but shaded room with periodic sun exposure.

Good luck!

lol don't listen to what all the manuals and stuff say my goldfish is now 13 years old so everyone should bow down before my greatness. hehe not really only joking. he is 13 though. i have a south facing bedroom and it gets really sunny in there so i pull the curtains a bit so he is slightly in the shade. i know one summer he got too warm and i thought he was dead, after half an hour of crying (i have had him forever remember, he's my longest surviving pet) i discovered he was alive and so i put him in some cold water. He has no lamp, no filter, just a plastic bowl.I feed him once a day and use tap water when i change the water.

If you leave a goldish in the dark for a very long time it would turn white!!

Yes I know, shut up about the goldfish because you are tlking about a siamese fighting fish right? what i am getting at it fish are more resilient than we think! i am NOT suggesting that your fish should go without a lamp or filter. I wouldn't want anything to happen to the little guy aww

Natural lighting. Not direct sunlight or total darkness. I've seen this little lamp that looks like a book light for Betta's. The light is not bright.

Neither. Keep in medium light. Sunlight will kill it and algae will grow in the dark.

Direct sunlight will make Betta soup.
