My goldfish swims right up to me when I'm near his tank. Then he hovers there looking right up at me as though to say "please, feed me." He spends all of the rest of his time foraging for food off of the plants and bottom of the tank or just swimming around. I swear he's begging.

Yes that is healthy goldfish behavior. My fish spit and splash me at feeding time. They are like puppies! They are begging, but don't give in to them and over feed. Feed once or twice a day all they can eat in 3 to 5 minutes.

It certainly seems as if they are! I've got other fish that do this as well. They've come to recognize people as a source of food, so when they see someone near the tank, they come over to see what's up (and what might drop into the water for them). The fact that they do this repeatedly should say something about the myth of the three-second goldfish memory!

Don't give in (too much)! Twice a day feedings of what they an eat in 2-3 minutes is plenty, and many fishkeepers swear by fasting your fish one day a week. Feeding them a variety of foods (I do a basic flake one meal and pellets, a frozen live food, or greens [squash, pea, romaine, or cucumber] as a second meal/treat) is healthier for them and keeps them from being bored with the same foods.

the fish is just conditioned to know that when you are near the tank you are going to feed it. So in a way it is begging, but not in any trained way.

Yes, they do. Actually, it is a conditioned response based on receiving food when you are in front of the tank, but all of my goldfish do the same when i approach their tank. (My fish are 5-7" long and have already lived for several years, so they get very active when i stand in front of their tank.)

Yeap...fish beg much like dogs do. If he swims up to the surface when you are near, he's probably hungry. If he is foraging, feed him a bit...even more frequently if you already do.
