My last betta fish died after having him for 3 years. Then I went to this weird pet store and got another. He's really small, like half the size of my old one. When I got my frist fish he acted strange too when we put him in our tank [3.5 gallons + chlorine removey stuff] he swam to the bottom and layed down on his side untill he got used to it. Now my new fish is doing the same only he floats to the top and is on his side, hes not dead because he flips to take air from the surface. Im really worried and I love him cause hes purple plz help :[

Thank you all. You all have very good advice, even if it differs a little.

I don't know what possessed me to start an aquarium by the seat of my pants. They are the most complex ecostructures I've ever been involved with.

Your advice, knowledge and references make it very hard to choose the best answer to my questions. I would like to have you choose for me but can't figure that out either.

Don't want to offend anyone but I guess I'm just a "Dumb Blonde"

Thanks Again,
Ann

What fish is the easiest to take care of (no thermometers, filters, all that jazz), lives the longest (1 year or more), and costs between $0 and $20?

I bought some kind of fern-like plant for my freshwater aquarium two or three weeks ago. This morning, I noticed the top of the plant had fallen off, and there was a small yellow insect (it looked like a caterpillar, and was the same size) emerging from the bud.

When I moved it away from the plant it was crawling towards, it ducked back into it's bud.

It's a light, almost transparent yellow colour, with small hairs/spikes covering it's body.

I have an African Dwarf Frog in the tank as well as some fry, and am worried on whether the bug will harm the ADF if she eats it, and if it would be better to remove the pest.

I tried Google-ing it, but came up with nothing. Thanks for you help!

Our standard pet shop gold fish has been living in his bowl since september and seems to like to sit at the bottom of the bowl for a majority of the day - is this normal?

I have an 80 gal freshwater aquarium with a Top Fin 30 and a Top Fin 60 filter. I have four large goldfish and one pleco. I've had the tank since Sept and never had an overflow problem but all of the sudden, it started to overflow. I changed to the Top Fin Bio filters to see if that would help and it didn't. I've taken the pump and filters apart and cleaned them. The cartridges are all clean as well. I don't know what to do. Please help!!! Thanks!

The tap water tests at zero, so that's not it and my test kit is a tube with chemicals to test the water not a test strip. I've tested the prepared water before I change it and it tests at zero.

The tank is a 4 gallon Biorb with filter that I changed 2 weeks ago.

I don't have a nitrate test kit so I don't know the answer to that.

Should I remove him from the tank? If so when? I just treated 2 gallons with the smallest amount of stress coat which claims to remove chlorine and chloramides. (It's the only dechlorinator I have). Should I wait 24 hours on the water? What if the ammonia continues to rise? Should I use the ammolock for now until his other water is ready? He's swimming around the tank now but Who knows when he'll get sick?

If I remove him from the tank, should I remove his plants with him?

A Lot of Questions--Thank You

Day before yesterday I sought advice for this at an ammonia level of 1.0. I was advised to do a water change until the ammonia level went down. Have changed the water twice, once each day. Now the ammonia level is up to 2.0 after the water change. It was almost at 3.0 before. This is a new tank. I overfed the fish at first. I've been changing 50% of the water once a week until two days ago then daily for two days. Before I changed the water two days ago I used ammolock. Have used stress coat to treat water and then stress zyme with each water change. Please help me. I don't want to lose my friend Michael.
