What fish is the easiest to take care of (no thermometers, filters, all that jazz), lives the longest (1 year or more), and costs between $0 and $20?

Betta

Be sure to give your betta at least 2 gallons of dechlorinated room temperature water preferably 4. It needs to be changed every 5 days. He also needs somewhere to hide and sleep. He needs a cover for his tank and he needs to have a light source for about 8 to 12 hours a day.

Soft silk plants are ok but live ones are better.

For your specs, none. There is no such things as a "bowl fish". All of them need tanks and filtration. If you don't want to heat it, get a 20 gallon, filter, some pretty silk plants(plastic ones tear fins), gravel. Let it cycle for about 4 weeks after setting it up and buy yourself ONE pretty little fantail goldfish. (They need 20 gallons each and if you aren't going to heat it then goldfish are the way to go) They can, if cared for properly, live over 25 years.

You will have to feed it around twice a day, do weekly water changes, check ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels, and just enjoy watching your goldie swim around his tank happily! They are wonderful little pets and are able to distinguish between faces and voices in humans.

Please rethink wanting a fish if you can't waver from your criteria on keeping them. Do a little research about what fish interest you and on the nitrogen cycle. Then if you still want a fish, get it a home that will keep it happy and healthy. Good luck and I hope I've enlightened you just a little!

Betas. They are super hardy and all you have to do is feed them and make sure they have clean water. No thermometers, filtration, not even an aerator as they come up to the surface to breath. I've had 2 and I think they've both lived well over a year.
