It's quite a surprise that you managed to keep both happy now..
Crab are ususally nite animal and betta sleep in nite..

Crab also hunt well in nite..So, your betta mus really be in full alert all the times, else very soon he will be nip!

Crabs are not good and easy to be kept as pet due to heir shy nature, so wat you see in most Pet-shops are usually bare tanks with minimal decor to show off the crabs, else it will sure shy from light..

So if you want to see more active crabs, you will have to create 'peep-holes'(by putting cardboard around the tank with small holes in them) or watch documentary shows loh..

Good Luck

The crab, by nature, is going to be a hider. He probably comes out a lot more when the tank light is off or at night when it's darker. That's when he'd naturally go out to scavenge for food.

Try using less light in or around their tank. Also, give him plenty of decorations to explore. (Plants, statues, whatever.) Another thing to consider is, if this tank setup is new, he may just be a little scared over the transition and isn't too sure about wandering out yet.

Make sure you have some type of sinking pellets for him to eat, as he's going to be a ground scavenger. Floating flakes may not make it down to him before the betta eats them.

Give him some time and a little darkness and the crab should come out of hiding more. Enjoy your tank!
