I am using Strart Right, and my fish are guppies. The tank is a five gallon tank. There are no fish currently in the tank.

Are there fish in there now? A 5 gallon tank can support no more than 5" of fish, so if you already have a few guppies, you are full and don't need more.

Start right is a B.S. product. It is live bacteria when they package it, but it has a shelf life of only a few days. This is why experience aquarists will not reccommend any off-the-shelf "starter." The only proven way to start the tank with a storebought product is with a product called bio-spira. This is a live bacteria colony that is refridgerated. The refridgeration causes the live bacteria to go dormant, and they don't need to eat. Off-the-shelf starters are essentially the same thing, but they are not refridgerated, so the bacteria quickly eats all the food it is packed with and starves to death, long before it hits the store shelves in most cases. So look for a refridgerated starter product(bio-spira is the only one, they have it patented), make sure it is not expired, and the success rate is very high. Then you could add fish the same day you add the bio spira.

For that size tank I reccommend no more than 3 guppies. They are a very active fish that need lots of space. For that reason most professional guppy breeders will say that 20 gallons is the minimum tank size for guppies. Personally I find that a bit extreme. 5 gallons will be fine as long as you don't get too many.

Guppies can go in after a week, and with a tank that small you can't have more than 5 guppies and nothing else in it.

Guppies are around 1.6 inches fully grown so you carnt add any more fish as the rule is for every 1 inch fish to one gallon!
So if youve got 4 guppy's i would keep it that way!

i would wait for 2 weeks until you add any fish

then you can add 2 guppies so your tank can cycle
look up 'tank cycling' on the internet.

glad you asked before you put the fish in!
