Until you research both, I would choose neither. Both have different needs and requirements. I will give you some quick information here. Bettas are tropical and need warmer temperatures and while they will survive in one of those betta bowls they do far better in a heated and filtered aquarium. They are peaceful to most fish but their fins will be nipped by most other species. They live between 1.5 and 2 years. Goldfish are a cool water fish and require no heater. The so called bowls are not suitable for them as they can grow quite large. They need a large aquarium with very good filtration. They should not be mixed with tropical species. Goldfish can live 20+ years.

Goldfish are much better for younger children and easierto take care of. Betta are prettier, but if you plan on getting more than one eventually, a Betta is not the way to go. When two or more Betta are in a tank they will fight to the death. I think Goldfish tend to live longer also.

First to Rachael B, betas do not live longer. Most betas even with outstanding care and environments won't live much longer than 5 years. Goldfish under optimal circumstances can live well over 25, I think the record was somewhere around 50.

As for which pet to choose, This depends on the amount of time you have to take care of your fish and how much space you have available to house it. Betas can live comfortably in 2.5 gallons but because of the small size of these tanks, they are very difficult to heat. Betas do well in water temps around 75 so a 5 gallon is actually as small as you would want to go. If you start with a good environment i.e. large enough tank, heater, filtration and a nice live plant for him/her to hide in you will have minimum maintenance of feeding and water changes.

If you get a goldfish, keep in mind there are NO fish suitable for a bowl. Goldies need 20 gallons MINIMUM! That's for one fancy goldfish any of the common goldfish like comets need 40 gallons a piece, so do not go out and buy a feeder thinking to house it in a 20 gallon tank. They need to be placed in ponds when they are large enough in all honesty. Commons can grow upwards of 15 to 20 inches in good conditions. If you have the space and the resources to keep goldfish, they do not need a heater as they are coldwater fish. You will of course still have to do water changes and feed them.

With both of these fish you will need test kits to test the water for things like ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates. Having any amount of ammonia and nitrites in their water can be detrimental to their health, no matter what fish. They can handle a VERY SMALL amount of nitrates, but do your best to keep it at zero.

Also, if you get a fish, sometimes they get sick. Make sure you have read up beforehand to know what you might come up against. Buy a book about taking care of your fish. This will become an invaluable resource in their care if you get a good one. I wish I knew of some to recommend, If you can't get a book there are lots of resources online. Read up about the possible problems you will face with each fish, and before you buy it make sure you will have the resources i.e. money to take care of medicines they need.

In optimal water conditions though, your fish shouldn't get sick. Just make sure you can take care of it if they do! I hope that some part of this has helped you figure out which fish you want! Good luck!

Betta's are the best. They like being the only one, can also be used as decoration (open vase with beta in it and a plant floating on the top)

With goldfish, you constantly have to feed them, and they like company (so that means more fish) and the tank needs to constantly be cleaned when you have a goldfish.

I've always been a fan of Goldfish. Mainly because you can later add more goldfish, or other community fish.

Bettas (males) are solitary fish.
