Our standard pet shop gold fish has been living in his bowl since september and seems to like to sit at the bottom of the bowl for a majority of the day - is this normal?

No. It's not normal.

I'm rather surprised your fish has lived this long. Goldfish don't do well in bowls and that's most likely why the little guy seems so 'sleepy'. He's probably suffering from ammonia poisoning.

=) There's TONS of fantastic sites out there with suggestions for goldfish setups, but my personal favorite is a simple 10 gallon tank ('standard pet shop goldfish' (usually comets) need about 10 gallons per fish until they're 5-6 inches long) with a heater, hood and light,a little gravel,a nice filter and some live plants. It shouldn't cost you more than $50 total and you'll have an extremely happy, lively little fish.

The fact that you're worried about this little guy says plenty about your personality-you're the good type. Most people just flush their fish to an agonizing death when they get bored with them. ^^ Research your little fishy some and find out what you like best. If you can afford larger than a 10 gallon tank and you have an interest in fish,by all means! The bigger the better with goldfish-just be sure that you learn as much as possible about these little guys. They're awesome fish and this little guy has an awesome person taking care of him. =)

Feel free to im me or email me if you'd like to talk fish. I love doing it. ^^

That's because goldfish are not supposed to live in a bowl. They need 10 gallons a piece, heater, filter and airator. Goldfish are extremly active fish, when they bottom sit constantly they are ill or have not enough oxygen. It is cruel to keep them in such conditions, that's why he's suffering. The goldfish bowl is a myth. Change his water everyday, all of it, until you can get him a suitable home. A ten gallon (which is still too small) is an affordable alternative to start with. Get the filter, and airator going in it. He may not be strong enough to handle a tank cycle at this point, but if you want to save him that's what you're going to have to do.

hes probably bored. or it may have some parasites or sickness. I have never seen any of mine over sit for hours but a little bit is ok. Maybe put a air bubbler in his bowl or something to entertain him.

Are you sure it's asleep?
Give it a good home. Bigger tank and proper water conditions. Would you be happy living in a matchbox?
