My last betta fish died after having him for 3 years. Then I went to this weird pet store and got another. He's really small, like half the size of my old one. When I got my frist fish he acted strange too when we put him in our tank [3.5 gallons + chlorine removey stuff] he swam to the bottom and layed down on his side untill he got used to it. Now my new fish is doing the same only he floats to the top and is on his side, hes not dead because he flips to take air from the surface. Im really worried and I love him cause hes purple plz help :[

If he is on his side, or if he seems to not be able to swim down, it may be a swim bladder problem. Try getting some frozen English peas (yes those nasty little green ones mom and dad always wanted you to eat), thaw one out until it is room temp, take the shell off, mash it up and feed it to him. If it is a problem with his swim bladder this should help. Good luck!

For betas to float on the surface on their side as a way of resting is very normal. I have heard of many doing that. Each betta has its own personality, this is seen distinctly in male bettas. They tend to act very weird at times.
Your betta is getting used to the new environment.
My first betta also acted extremely weird when I first got him... but he got used to the new place.
One major thing that I have noticed which bothers bettas is the water current caused due to air pumps... If you have an air pump in his tank make sure its not giving out too many bubbles and increasing the water current cos bettas have long fins and find it diificult to swim in a strong current. They get stressed easily in such an environment. Besides, they don't need as many bubbles cos they are labyrinth.
