1. aquarium cleaner (such as this: http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18376/si1381320/cl0/junglelimeoffliquid8ozpump or http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18376/si1381876/cl0/pythonrydyt1 ) or http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18376/si1380830/cl0/aquariumpharmaceuticalssafeeasywipes (though I have never used the wipes)
2. a very dilute bleach/water solution (make sure to rinse rinse rinse afterwards)
3. water and a sponge (no soap)

Whichever of the above you use, if chemicals are used be sure to thoroughly rinse before using agian.

If the buildup is on the glass, you can scrape it off (very carefully) with a razor blade. If your aquarium is acrylic (probably not unless you specifically looked for an acrylic) then using a razorblade isn't a good idea. You can also use something like this: http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18374/si1379624/cl0/kentproaquariumscraper12 with either type of aquarium.

Another really cool product (more for algae) but that helps keep your class clear is a magfloat: http://www.bigalsonline.com/BigAlsUS/ctl3684/cp18374/si1380163/cl0/magfloatmagneticaquariumacryliccleanermedium
It's actuallly two magnets. One is on the outside of the glass, the other is on the inside. You can pull the outside magnet along the class, and the inside magnet will scrub the algae free. you never have to get your hands wet.

Save money, use plain white vinegar from the store. This removes lime deposits from hard water. Rinse after using, if you get any in the tank water it will drop the pH, though if you are getting lime deposits you have harder water. Hardness stabilizes pH, a little (few drops) in the tank won't have any effect. Vinegar is a standard consumable in my fishroom.
