i have about an 8 inch dogface that is very healthy. he eats fine, has never caught disease, and is very active. i have checked the water and everything is fine. the only problem is maybe once a day or every other day he will open his gills for maybe 20 seconds. what does this mean?

Mine do this all the time. Weather you notice or not, your puffer is taking chunks out of shells and/or rock in your tank to maintain his teeth (puffer teeth never stop growing and they need to keep them filed). sometimes these pieces get lodged inside their gill and they need to Blow them out. Kind of looks like he is yawning, but then if you look closley, you will see small stone or scale pieces come out.

Nothing to worry about. he's healthy!
They are cool fish aren't they.

Probably nothing at all other than he's fanning out his gills a bit. Lots of fish do it.
