Generally you'll have a bigger problem with fin nippers than with a betta attacking other fish. A lot of it depends on the size of the tank. If the fish have enough room that you should be alright unless you get an extremely aggressive betta. My mom bought one for her 55-gallon tank that had guppies, mollies, platies, etc. in it and the betta did just fine. When he died after several years she put another in there and he started killing the neons and eating the fins of the male fancy guppies. So you can take your chances, if it's in with a plecostamus (one type of fish that stick to the side) then you'll be alright. It's kind of a trial and error thing to see if you got an extremely aggressive betta.

if its a small tank then no, but if u have like a 5-10 gal. then ya, but no other aggressive fish. also you need lots of hide outs for the fish...i went to a pet store in PA once and in every large tank there was one male Betta. They looked so much better then the ones that are kept in a a smaller bowl alone.

I currently have my betta in a 5 gallon tank with a cat fish, a ghost shrimp and 5 neons.

You need to make sure that you do not put a betta with agressive or nippy fish as the betta's flowing fins tend to get torn up, which can lead to infection and/or death.

They tend to do well in a tetra community tank.

Yes, U can mix different types with Bettas, but U must be careful as U know Betta's not a gentle fish. But U must also know that what makes Bettas fights and make it sounds so aggressive. They fight in order to protect their young, territories and to scare off enemies. Other than Fin Snipper like (mostly fishes in group) Barbs, cold water fish like Goldfish, Long finnage fishes like Guppies and Angelfish... I think it will be fine for others to stay with it. Bottom dweller like Pleco will be nice since it goes along with all types, even Arowana.. But it get big easily, please take note.

Lots of bad info about this very quesiton is floating around out there. Abot 1/2 of the people here will tell you no, the other 1/2 yes.

Yes, you can put bettas with other fish. They are very peaceful fish and your only worry would be the betta getting picked on or getting his fins nipped.

Like you said you already knew, male bettas cannot be kept together. Also keep him away from other fish who like to nip fins. I think he should be just fine with that pleco. You can make your tank really colorful and add some neon and cardinal tetras (six of each) depending on your tank size.

bettas will attack other bettas or sometimes on that look like them (long wavy tails). by the way, there are very many sucker fishes. if you have a heated tank, you can put an otocinclus which will grow to 2 inches. if non heated, get a pleco. the common pleco will get to 2 feet, so get one in dwarf variety (such as clown)... good luck in your fishy adventures! :-B

I keep a fine male betta n with 4 Black Neons and 4 Pygmy Cory's and a Ghost Shrimp with no problems in a planted 20g tank.

I want to get Cherry Shrimp and don't trust him in the tank with them so he is getting a nice 3g tank to himself soon.

what's the largest tank you can get?

5gallons:
1 betta
3cory cats
you'll need a filter, heater, thermometer, and SMOOTH gravel. if you get plants get real or silk, plastic can tear bettas fins.

any smaller than that and you can't really have fish with them. if you can have larger than that let me know and I'll give a few more suggestions.
