I am considering adopting a puppy that my friends found. She's adorable and cuddly. I already have a shih-tzu and i want to find her a friend so this dog would be perfect except I need to know what she is! I will not adopt her if she appears to be a pitbull due to strict apartment/city rules and the safety of my dog. I understand that pitbulls are stereotyped the wrong way sometimes but its a risk i'm not willing to take. If she becomes more of a dane or a boxer i would be willing to take her. She is black and white. She is about 4 months old and 22 lbs. Her paws are pretty large. I have pictures that i can send if someone feels they can answer my question please e-mail me at lalbrigh@spt.com. otherwise, can someone tell me based on the weight and paws, etc. if this sounds like a pitbull? someone suggested a cross between a dane and a boston terrier. is that even possible?? thank you.

Our new puppy has been puking and has had diarrhea since the day after we brought her home. Last night, we made an emergency call to the vet and they did a parvo test but (it was out dated) it came back negative. They gave us meds to give to her and injected some IV solution for her mild dehydration. This am, she was in worse shape than last night. She puked her meds so we took her in to the vet. After doing further reading, I am pretty certain it is parvo. Her stool is watery and bloody. I've read the chances of survival are around 80% if caught in time. Has anyone had a puppy with parvo this severe that has survived? What can we expect in the next week?? Thanks for any info.

we awake every morning to pee in the kitchen on the appliances; bathroom floors; he pees on the furniture (is ruining it) and the hard wood floors; we've tried bitter apple; we've tried to rid of his scent. I suspect he's bored and defiant; any advise on breaking this habit of his.

I have a 11 week old pup and sometimes she is outside with us while the kids play or we are doing yard work, so I take her bowl out there when its her meal time. Sometimes I notice she goes immidiatley after eating or even stops while eating and goes potty and then continues eating.
I was wondering if we continue feeding her outside will it be helpful towards the housebreaking process? Will she start associating potty time with outside, or will the outdoor feeding confuse her?

He just follows his nose everywhere and digs under the fence.
I have a huge yard and dog proofing would be a nightmare.

My doggies are blue heelers. I'd rather allow them the freedom to walk around & take their time, without me pulling on a leash, when let outside. I do watch them. 1/2 of the time, they do great. The other 1/2, they run to the neighbor's house, to people walking throughout the neighborhood, across the road, etc. On 2 occasions, the male heeler barely missed on oncoming car. I'm hollaring, "Come on. Get back over here." They are steadily running farther away. (I won't even create the vivid picture of me chasing them.) When they do so, I scold them both....only for them to do it again & be more weary of coming to me....in avoidance of the scolding. Is there a RIGHT way to train them? I'm obviously not doing it. (And I do, of course, give praise / treats when they do well.)

I just adopted a 1yr. old female maltese that was infested with fleas. Yesterday she had a series of shots, including rabies. She also had a chip implanted.

She is eating and drinking normally but after I bathed her with flea shampoo I noticed a little blood on the white towel. I put her in a diaper for an hour and when I took it off it was dry but there were little blood stains in it. It wasn't a huge amount. I checked her tummy and her hind quarters but there were no cuts or sores, no blood in her white hair either.

She seems to be acting healthy, following me from room to room, etc. What could be the problem?

Pup had blood test. Everything normal.
Elevated Urea (BUN) ate meat for dinner night before. High protein.
Creatinine normal, urine concentrated. All blood work good.
Is this reason to worry?

Advice please. I have just adopted a three year old blue merle border collie from an animal rescue.
The only history given was that he was brought up with 3 children and a cat and was given to the rescue (along with the cat) because his owners where moving and the new property had a 'No Pets' policy. I will never know if this story is true or false.
I haven't brought him home yet as I am having new fencing put up in my garden to make it pooch proof. I go to the rescue most days to walk him, I hope to fetch him home next week. He isn't use to a lead, he tries to bite it in a playful way. He pulls like mad too. Would a haltie be a good idea once I get him home? The rescue give me a choker to walk him with, but he pants and chokes like crazy. He will sit, lie give paw on command but they are brief, as soon as he sits he's up again and the same for lie down. He doesn't like other dogs and isn't neuterd. Ides or advice welcome. Would agility be a possibility in future or is he too old?

i dont get why staffordshire bull terriers have such a bad rep! i was brought up with one since birth, she was my best friend right up untill she died when i was 16....i now have a little staffie pup and she is gorgeous and so lovely! i know there is storys on them attacking people, but my god, if a poodle was brought up wrong, they would attack people 2! blame the owners not the breed!

I juat cannot grasp the logic people are using to come to that conclusion, every question I ask about breed specific bans.. someone answers with something to the affect.."I knew 2 rotties and they one day attacked their owners with no reason at all, they are all dangerous dogs because of that" Firstly I would like to say that 99% of all bites are the fault of the human for improperly interpreting dog behaviour. Secondly, just because 1% of an entire breed of dog attacks and hurts someone does not in any way indicate that the other hundreds of thousands of dogs belonging to that breed will do the same. Explain how that makes sense, logically.. tell me how the minority can possibly predict the behaviour of the majority..

Why do people get them as pets? I don't mean people who get them to use for agility or obedience training. I mean the people, often first time dog owners, that get them simply as a pet.
I am also referring to people who get them as puppies off the farm, rescuing older dogs or puppies from shelters is a completely different matter altogether.

We adopted a fox hound mix from the pound. Wonderfull dog, does not bark, loveable, very smart, has learned several tricks in 2 months. He is very very gentle. If my chihuahua is in the yard and won't come back in he gently picks her up and brings her to me. He is a monster and they are like mutt and jeff.
However, the big lummox is having some kind of seperation anxiety. He is 14 mos old and I can not even walk out to the mailbox and when i come back in he has done something naughty, like get in the garbage, empty the hamper, pull the sheets off the bed. He never chews anything up , he just makes a mess. How can I break this? I can't take him everywhere I go, in fact we can hardly get him into the car, i think he is afraid he is going to be left again.

I had purchased an Am. Eskimo from an ad I saw n the paper. I wondered y the $ was so low. I went 2 the house, it was very trashy. I picked out a puppy and then asked the purchasee if I could take her 2 show my boyfriend and bring her back the next day, she agreed. She was completely covered in dirt, I gave her three "water-baths" (no soap), and wrapped her in a towel so she wouldn't get cold. She was covered in fleas and had a ton of "flea-dirt" in 3 different spots on her body, one causing a bump. The next day, I took her 2 the vet. The vet told me that if I took her back to the owner, she could die because she was already anemic. So for the last 2 nights, she has kept me awake all night. Not from whinning or wanting 2 play, but every time she has 2 potty, she'll wake up and tell me (every hour). Is that normal for puppies that age to go every hour? I was constantly feeding her, so I stopped feeding her at night and she stopped pooping as much as night. She is eatting well on her own.

We just got a new puppy. She's about 4 months old now. We are going to a family members place on the weekend just for the evening, but since she isn't house trained completely yet I don't want to give her the run of their house. We'd like to tie her outside, maybe bring her in periodically. How long can I leave her outside for? We will be visiting for about 5 to 6 hours. It's still a little chilly outside, but it is supposed to be 7C and sunny on friday... any answers would be appreciated. We're new to all of this! Thanks :)

about 12 weeks we were told but looks more like 8 - 10 to me (he will be taken to the vets tomorrow to see if they can guess any better) anyway, she will be cage training him, he was in a cage in the place she got him from so him being in there is no problem, however, they used to put paper in the cage fpr his toilet, does anyone have any tips on how to break that habbit and get him to toilet train outside?
Thanks
