i dont get why staffordshire bull terriers have such a bad rep! i was brought up with one since birth, she was my best friend right up untill she died when i was 16....i now have a little staffie pup and she is gorgeous and so lovely! i know there is storys on them attacking people, but my god, if a poodle was brought up wrong, they would attack people 2! blame the owners not the breed!

Amen to that! I have been posting questions on this subject for the past few days and the conclusion I have drwn is that people are prone to stereotyping.. they knew someone who had a dog that attacked someone for no reason and it was a certain breed therefore they come to the conclusion that all dogs of that breed are dangerous and should be banned etc. Its sad as heck . Where I live the law says and I quote..
“pit bull” includes,
(a) a pit bull terrier,
(b) a Staffordshire bull terrier,
(c) an American Staffordshire terrier,
(d) an American pit bull terrier,
(e) a dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics that are substantially similar to those of dogs referred to in any of clauses (a) to (d); (“pit-bull”)
end quote... These breeds of dogs and dogs that merely "look like" these breeds are banned. That means that they are not allowed to be bred owned nothing.. luckily a grandfather clause allowed people to keep their existing dogs for the remainder of their lives but they must be sterilized, muzzled etc and at any time they can be taken away and destroyed from your home or a public place if someone so much as whispers a complaint that the dog may be aggressive. If your mutt dog "looks" like a pitty breed the onus is on you to prove that it is not related in any way.. If you cant well its killed if you got it after the new law came into effect. Point is ANY dog can bite... mixed breeds are statistically the main culprits but you have to factor in the fact that there are more mixed breeds overall and so the numbers dont reflect the temperament of all the dogs... just like one Staffy that bites does not indicate that all staffies will do so. People need to step back and realize that ANY dog of ANY breed can bite, some do more damage than others, but that does not mean that all of them will do it in their life. We need to step up and make a law that protects dogs AND people. Not just singles out a certain breed for persecution... I believe society will look back upon this as the equivalent of the genocide perpetrated in Nazi Germany.. just like hitler ordered the murder of jews based on his stereotypical assumptions so has our government ordered the murder of hundreds of dogs based on stereotypical assumptions of the ignorant. Love your dog and fight for others of her kind they need all the heroes they can get lord knows hundreds of them are everyday heroes across the globe working in therapy, rescue, law enforcement and are heroes to their family everyday simply because of the joy they bring. Give your little piglet a hug for me, I am fighting for his brothers here in Ontario, Canada.

that's true. I've seen a staffie and at first they are frightening because they look like a pit bull. There's a difference to my understanding, right? Anyway, I've been in contact with poodles and they are horrible dogs, and rated one of the worst for kids. The owners are to blame.
I was attacked by a jack Russell once and I have a scar down my nose to remind me.
I've had an american eskimo, german sheppard (I cried when she died she was the best) then two Australian Sheppard and a little mut that had pit mixed with it. All the dogs were good except for the one that was mixed with a pit. When we got her we didn't know what she was mixed with, cause we got her when she was a pup(5wks) and at the pound. Once it got a little older I found it chewing on my infants arm luckily she didn't get hurt but it scared me and my daughter. We got rid of her the next day. Sometimes i also think its breed into them to have such an aggression towards others.

Well i own the breed luckily for me his face is gorgeous and not so tough and hard like others i have seen looool, always get complements saying he is so darn gorgeous and good looking. But seriously i had my staffy since he was 9weeks and before i got him i did some research into the breed etc. What i find is way back in the day they were known for fighting and being vicious "in the wrong hands". They still do today but its mainly all these young wanna be thugs parading the freaking streets using their dogs as weapons and for status reasons. It really bugs me cause these ppl dont really care for them. SO when you have the like of these ppl on the streets of course ppl gonna hate the breed and try and right them off. Its a shame cause with the right love and care they are the most adorable dogs and so loyal. I have a child and the bond my staffy has with her and me omg its ridiculous seriously so amazing! Until these lovely dogs stop ending up in the wrong hands their name will forever be tarnished!! Obviously any dog can bite and a staffy to a chihuahua well pretty much we know which one would cause more damage. But you gotta be cautious with any dog no matter what the breed. Just know they have off and on days like us and if you have that strong bond you know every sign. I can read my dog like a book i think even he is shocked lol. But my point is some ppl dislike them because of what "humans have done to them and their name"!

SOME people in the UK get Staffies as image accessories. They seem to be the ideal dog if you are a young male who wears a hooded top, a burberry baseball cap and a pair of Rockport boots...we call them CHAVS where I live. I see staffordshire bull Terrie's attached to the local yobs near to where I work. I am probably being very judgemental but everyone I work with dislikes these dogs due to the people who own them. We have had a few incidents outside my office when a couple of Staffies almost attacked my manager after she complained too the two young owners who where kicking our office fence down for fun!! They train these dogs to fight, it's very sad. I hate to see irresponsible men and women who have dogs like Staffies.

a lot has to do with the media! Staffys were bread for fighting at first and when a person is mattcked the media sometimes uses a pix of staffy or normal bull terrier coz they don't know the difference. the public c the pix and think staffy dangerous. My neighbours were scared of my staffy (his name rooney) until i let them meet him mainly coz he bouncey all the time. jack russels are one of the most likly ones to attack other peps or dogs. Staffy/bull terriers are very lovin dogs just they get bad press. Its up2 us as good dog owners that they arn't bad, I have no problem with mine playing with children/adults all he wants to do is play tug of war with his rope .

Well i love staffs and am considering this as my next dog.I agree with you,its the way there brang up that matters like you said a poodle could attack if it wasn't raised correctily and jr's are known for more bites then licks but theres never any predjudice about them.If raised properly and socilised throughly a staff is a great family pet who's humerous, loyall and very affectionate.

Hi Dizzymoo - I know Staffies can be lovely pets, and I've met some nice ones, but my dog was subjected to an unprovoked attack by two, and after seeing those injuries I could never forget them. They don't just bite, they grab, pull, rip and tear, and they don't let go. Probably the owner's fault, but it still makes me very nervous when I see a Staffy. LOL.

That is just other peoples misconception of the breed due to media hype and bad press scaring folks, well I have a staffie,as if you couldn't tell!! and he has never bit or attacked anyone, and he is great with most dogs, depends on the other dog's attitude, otherwise never a problem with him or and other staffies I've had,Like you say any dog can be nasty if it is not brought up properlt and resposibly by the owners.Good luck with your pup.

You are so right my lovely. Staffie's are adorable, furthermore, I believe there is no such thing as a bad dog of any breed, only a bad owner.

I have nothing against staffordshire bull terriers its the people who have brought them to the attention of the media. We had rottweilers then dobermans there seems to be a lull then another breed of dog is getting hammered its time they looked at the owners & throw them into prison.
