Our new puppy has been puking and has had diarrhea since the day after we brought her home. Last night, we made an emergency call to the vet and they did a parvo test but (it was out dated) it came back negative. They gave us meds to give to her and injected some IV solution for her mild dehydration. This am, she was in worse shape than last night. She puked her meds so we took her in to the vet. After doing further reading, I am pretty certain it is parvo. Her stool is watery and bloody. I've read the chances of survival are around 80% if caught in time. Has anyone had a puppy with parvo this severe that has survived? What can we expect in the next week?? Thanks for any info.

I took her back into the vet this am to have her treated. They haven't called me back but after researching, I'm quite certain it is Parvo. They gave her IV solution last night during our emergency call and the tech said this am that she was mildly dehydrated. I just hope and pray she is strong enough to survive it!!

Hi Cate!
The point is that without intense treatment, the victims of parvo die of dehydration. Treatment generally consists of IV or sub-cutaneous fluids and antibiotics. There is no cure. Veterinarians can only treat the symptoms palliatively, and try to keep the dog alive by preventing dehydration and loss of proteins. As there is no cure for any virus, treatment for parvo is mostly that of supporting the different systems in the body during the course of the disease. This includes giving fluids, regulating electrolyte levels, controlling body temperature and giving blood transfusions when necessary. Your puppy needed constant veterinary help within 24 hours during 7-10 days,
Dogs with parvovirus need immediate veterinary care because they are usually very sick. They should not be treated at home if they are significantly ill. I would recommend a thorough examination by other veterinarian.
Update: Cate, my prayers and thoughts with you.
If your pup survives the first 3-4 days, it will usually live. Dogs that recover are immune to the disease.

I would suggest taking her to another vet to double check the first results. If your puppy does have parvo, not only is it very messy to clean up but without the proper care and supervision the chances of survival are not very good. I have worked as a vet technician for a long time and have seen it many times. If you like your vet, insist upon another test!

Oh, it's awful. I just lost 2 last year to it. The best advice, as cruel as it sounds, is do not have this pup in your home. I had my two inside, trying to nurse them back. I did everything I was told, but my two died. The reason I say do not have it in your home,...the clean - up is almost impossible. ONCE WE REALIZED IT WAS PARVO, we put ours behind a baby gate in the kitchen for easy clean - up. I know you are not considering another pup now, but if yours, God forbid, does pass, you may. Bleach is the only thing that will effectively kill it. So you will have to mix bleach & water to clean all hard surfaces & to spray every inch of your yard. You also have to spray every square inch of your home with a professional cleaner. After calling many vets & pet stores, one finally made a special order for the inside cleaner. (For example, I couldn't clean hunter green carpet with bleach. And color-safe bleach doesn't kill it.) It is something else. I can tell you more about parvo, but it would take pages & days. E-mail me if you are interested. Good luck. I know it's heart - wrenching. I'm sorry.

I had a puppy once that I thought had parvo, turned out to be a severe case of hook worms. However his symptoms were not as bad as what you are describing. I would have the dog checked out by another vet. Also parvo is highly contagious to other dogs, it can live in your yard etc, for quite some time.
Best of luck.

you need to take him to the vet ASAP and leave him there for treatment, my pup had it pretty bad but made it. Ive saved many puppies from the brink of death that had parvo. The best thing to do is take him to the vet and they will hook him up to an IV and treat him. If you dont take him to the vet then you can expect him to die in a day or so.

My sister had a small dog that lived through it. It took a long time but it made it.They took him to the vet and had it on an I v for about a week. You need to decide if that is what you want and then insist that the vet try everything they can do to save it.Some vets don't think it is worth the time.
