My first and the last (5th) dog are the best and only get crated when I have to. My daughters dog my second I will stick in a crate more often along with my third. My fourth runs to her crate for anything an prefers it. SOme dogs need crated more than others. You may not know the whole story and you said the one was co-owned with a trainer. Im sure a trainer may have suggested this due to issue the pet may have.
How long has she had the dog? Best thing for a dog with "issues" is whelping box theory training. Which requires 23 hours a day in a crate to begin with.

That is definently dog abuse. I adopted a dog in the same situation years ago. It belonged to a friend of mine you didn't have the time or space so she just kept it in a cage that was way too small for him ( he was a border collie) That is no life for an animal. People who take on pets should have the financial means, space and time to give to their pet. Under no circumstances should a pet be placed in a cage all day with no water. I'm sure it doesn't get much play time either. What I would suggest doing is calling animal control. Explain to them that there is a dog in need who's being locked up in a cage all day. If it stinks that bad then that means she's been neglecting the poor animal. Or have your mom's friend ask about the dog and see if she minds taking him off her hands. If she doesn't like it very much I wouldn't see why this is a problem. Who cares if she's mean, stand up for what you believe in (i'm sure its not animal abuse!) Use your head, I hope everything works out!! Good luck

DON'T call animal control unless the are a "no kill" shelter. If you call them and they DO get the dog, if no one adopts it in a few weeks, it'll be put to sleep. Not a nice thing to know that a dog is abused and then taken away an killed before it ever has a life.
Your cousin sounds like a animal abuser and a bully, I've faced down two so-called bullies over this kind of abuse to animals. The law is on your side if you use it with skill and tact.
Cousin or no cousin, as I said, I've done this twice. (And never had to complete the first phone call, they gave me the dogs because they knew I wasn't playing games.)
Tell her to either give you the dog IMMEDIATELY are you are going to call the police AND the Humane Society! Have your phone in hand and the numbers at your finger tips. Here's one for you. (The Humane Society of the United States -- 202-452-1100 you should call them and find out information on your state and maybe a local phone number as well.) Show her the phone numbers! Let her know you're not going to put up with this kind of cruelty but be polite .
Don't scream and yell, and don't take no for an answer be firm but tactful, if they get physical, have THEM arrested. If they insist you leave, LEAVE, but be on the phone with the police while you're walking off, let them hear you talking to the police so they know you aren't playing around.
Once you get the dog take him immediately to the vet, tell them who let you have him and how he was treated so they can make an appropriate detailed chart relating to the abuse. Believe me if you call the Human Society and they find abuse, they will take ALL her animals, she will be fined and not allowed to own another pet till her probation is up. I had a neighbor that had all their animals taken away, even 3 horses and I wasn't the one who reported them. You just have to stand your ground, just like it was your child or your mother you were protecting. Don't break the law, just do what's right. If they don't give you the dog, FOLLOW THROUGH WITH YOUR CALLS, RIGHT THEN, NOT LATER!! If she gets away with it because you back off, she'll assume you're weak and you'll never be able to deal with her in ANY situation. When you make a promise to do the right thing, stick with it! It's all according if you are really concerned about this animal and have the courage to back it up.

Call the humane society in your town, they will go look at the conditions of the house and how your cousin is treating the animals. You should tell them everything you have seen done to the animals and if you can provide them with pictures, if the people at the humane society find she is being abusive to one or more of the animals then they can and might take all of the cats and dogs away from her and then charge her with animal abuse which would mean a fine and that she will never be able to own any more animals.

She is definitely abusing the second dog, and there is no reason ever, for animal abuse. This poor dog, needs help desperately, and can't speak for itself. If I was you, I would call animal control, and report her,{you can do it without her knowing, that it was you, that reported her}, just say you want to remain annonymous. That dog needs to be taken away from her, because she obviously does not care what happens to it, and adopted by a loving and caring owner that will give the poor thing a good home. Just think of how the dog must feel. It deserves the chance to live a much better life than this.

Yes, something needs to be done for this dog. That is a miserable existence for him. Approach you cousin gently, explain your concern in a thoughtful manner. If the dog is a pure bred dog she got from a breeder, try to contact them. A responsible breeder would want the dog back and the opportunity to rehome it. Call animal control if she will not listen to you. Keep in mind, unless there are signs of physical abuse or severe neglect, animal control may not be able to do much. It may depend on the laws in the area too.

I believe you cousin should just give the two dogs and the cats away to the ASPCA . If she only cares for her 1st dog them why does she has the other animals in the house, is not fair for them. So brave yourself and tell her to give them away so that the ASPCA can find this poor little angels a loving and caring home. Think about it, you will feel much better.

This is disgusting treatment of the poor animal. You should encourage her to give the dog away. Personally I don't think she should have any animals. It is almost worse that she treats one well, because she clearly knows what she SHOULD be doing and therefore must be conscious of the neglect and abuse she is inflicting on the other animal. She sounds a bit sick to me. Pluck up the courage to confront her about it and call the Animal Welfare officers if she doesn't change her behavior. Either that or have the suffering - thirst, cramp, lack of love and affection, unhygienic conditions - on your conscience

So many people continue to abuse dogs (and children) because people who know about it are afraid to speak up.
If this dog is being kept in the conditions you say it is, I say risk the wrath of your cousin and help that animal. Usually people who don’t really care about their animals can be persuaded to part with them for money. Get as much together as you can and offer to buy the dog (and then re-home it) if she isn’t willing to give it away.
